SECTION 1: SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S)-THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED -

18 moths of experience as a Correctional Officer II with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, & Reentry or 12 months of experience as a Correctional Officer II with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry and 6 months of experience as a Correctional/Detention Officer with another agency.

A letter of recommendation from the unit Deputy Warden is required by the close of the announcement. Any candidate who does not provide an approved, signed letter of recommendation will not proceed in the testing process (form located on the CPR intranet).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better.

SUSPENSION – Ineligible to apply for one year from the date of suspension.

VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position. Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with CPR to be considered for a job offer. No job offers will be made without an approved voluntary demotion.

DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion. A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR. Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion. The first day served of the demotion shall be considered the effective date of the demotion.

SECTION 2: EVALUATION AND TESTING PROCESS -

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of training and experience. Study references/resources are posted on the ADC Internet and Intranet websites. All relevant information is subject to verification. Please note the following: 

Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume and must include adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.

Applicants who meet the KSAs and selective preferences will be invited to the next step of the process. Applicants who achieve or exceed a passing score on the oral board interview will have their names placed on the Central Promotional Register after other promotional points are included, if any.

Rank on the register will be calculated by adding passing scores from the written exam, oral board interview, and other promotional points.

SECTION 3: OTHER PROMOTIONAL POINTS -

YEARS OF SERVICE IN QUALIFYING CLASS ABOVE THE 2YR MINIMUM: 1yr=10pts; 2yrs=20pts; 3yrs=30pts. Years of service will be based on clear dates of employment you provided on your resume and/or online application.

PASS PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (VOLUNTARY): Maintain 50%=40pts. You must supply a copy of your voluntary physical fitness certificate.

DEGREES: AA=20pts; BA=30pts; MA=40pts. You must supply a copy of your transcript(s) for college degrees.

SECTION 4: REGISTER/JOB OFFERS -

The register developed from this recruitment will expire when a new external statewide register is developed. D.O. 504 specifies that a register shall be active for the period of time specified in the announcement or until it no longer satisfies recruitment needs, whichever occurs first. Registers may be extended when necessary.  

When job offers are extended, they are made to candidates in rank order and in consideration of the geographic preference.

To change geographic preference, please submit a revised form through your Personnel Liaison.

A candidate who declines any two promotional/job offers in the location(s) for which they have indicated their geographical preference(s), shall be placed at the end of the register.

If a candidate declines a third promotional/job offer their name will be permanently removed from the register.  

Employees who are offered a position and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.

NOTE: If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures. The procedures may include medical/physical, psychological evaluation, updated background investigation, and the completion of the Correctional Officer Training Academy.

SECTION 5: EDUCATIONAL STIPEND -

Positions in this classification are eligible for an educational stipend: Associate’s Degree 2.5%; Bachelor's Degree: 5%; Master's Degree or above: 7.5%. If you have completed one of these degrees, submit the Education Supplement-Security form Education Supplement and documentation of your degree as noted on the form with your application. If eligible and appointed, the stipend amount will be effective on the date of your appointment. Education requests submitted after the date of appointment are effective at the beginning of the pay period they are received in personnel. This stipend is subject to available funding and may be canceled at any time. 

Job Duties:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Correctional Sergeant, the Correctional Corporal monitors inmates/offenders, maintains control, and enforces the rules of a correctional facility. The Corporal performs a full range of duties, including assisting the Sergeant with staff assignments during designated shifts, training, and evaluating and assessing staff performance. The Corporal reviews misconduct reports submitted by subordinate personnel for completeness and accuracy before forwarding them to the Sergeant.

 

This role includes supervising Correctional Officer 2s assigned to specific areas or sections within a unit while maintaining inmates' safe custody, discipline, and welfare during assigned shifts. Working under the direction of the Correctional Sergeant, the Corporal supports the maintenance of secure, orderly operations by overseeing daily duties, monitoring inmate interactions, and ensuring staff adhere to established protocols and procedures. Responsibilities also include conducting accurate headcounts in assigned posts and ensuring inmate safety, such as isolating individuals upon requests for protection or incidents requiring separation (e.g., sexual assault or other safety threats).

The Corporal inspects living and work areas to ensure proper security, sanitation, and safety for staff and inmates, and examines vehicles and equipment to ensure safety, accountability, and compliance. The role requires preparing and completing reports related to incidents or inappropriate activities and ensuring compliance with statutory laws, department policies, and procedures. This includes writing and reviewing incident, significant incident, and use of force reports, initiating administrative and inmate misconduct investigations, and recommending or initiating prescribed actions per department guidelines.

The position also requires attending scheduled training, on or off-site. Additionally, this position may involve driving on state business and performing other duties as assigned.

WORK CONDITIONS: Must be able to work all shifts, as required; exposure to hazards associated with those assigned duties maintaining security, order, and discipline of inmates in and outside of correctional institution. Work in adverse weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of: Federal, state and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the custody and control of inmate populations; methods and techniques of paraprofessional counseling as applied within the rehabilitative programs of the unit; methods and techniques of training staff in the security practices and procedures; rules and policies governing classification, discipline and due process of the inmate populations; order and discipline as applied to inmates including self-defense, weapons, and related defense and control equipment; portable and stationary two-way radio systems; methods and techniques of management and supervision.

Skill in: Verbal and written communication. Using the radio systems and communication codes; the use of

 

computer and telecommunications equipment; proficiency with weapons and other defense and control equipment; managerial, organizational, motivational, analytical, and problem solving; conducting research and extracting, compiling, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, and presenting information; interpersonal relations as applied to contacts with administrators, managers, employees, and representatives within the agency and other state agencies; prioritizing, mentoring, and decision making. Leading and coaching subordinate staff.

Ability to: Supervise, guide, and evaluate the performance of subordinate officers. Work all shifts and all posts, as required; work in adverse weather conditions; apply and interpret communication as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; maintain a calm and professional temperament during emergency situations; perform administrative work activities appropriate to the assignment; work in a prison environment.
