Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) has an excellent opportunity for a highly-skilled and motivated student Intern!

Internship Opportunity: Supply and Demand Intern – Arizona Department of Water Resources - Statewide Planning Section

Position Overview: The Supply and Demand Internship with the Arizona Department of Water Resources offers budding professionals the unique opportunity to explore several specialized roles in water resource management. The internship is specifically geared towards the comprehensive study of water supply and demand across Arizona. Interns will gain hands-on experience and insight into the intricate challenges and solutions concerning water management in the state.

Location Requirements: Given the nature of the work, specifically the management of physical files, the successful candidate must work on-site at the ADWR office. This in-person experience is also beneficial for interns, allowing them to regularly interact with and learn from seasoned staff members.

Schedule: [Hours may vary from 20 hours per week up to] 40 hours per week.

Job Duties:

Potential Roles:

Research Roles

  • Initiate the identification process for facilities earmarked for next year's basins.
  • Dive deep into background research on complex facilities with a special focus on mining operations.
  • Collate essential details on each groundwater basin to facilitate detailed reporting.
  • Scout for GIS files instrumental for estimations and future projections.


GIS Specialist Roles

  • Curate annual maps for individual basins.
  • Create sector-specific basic GIS identification maps.
  • Design detailed geographic maps for each basin to be integrated into reports.
  • Note: Prior GIS knowledge would be advantageous for this role, enhancing the mapping accuracy and insights.

Report Writing and Reviewing Roles

  • Ensure the comprehensibility of reports to cater to a wide audience, especially the public.
  • Undertake meticulous proofreading to check for grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Ensure uniformity and consistency across different reports.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Focus on grammar and clarity: The selected intern will play a pivotal role in refining reports, ensuring clear and concise content. This will involve a thorough review of statements, paragraphs, and data tables.
  • Data Review: This entails a rigorous examination of numbers within our primary spreadsheets linked to the dashboard. It’s essential these figures align with those reported in individual analyst spreadsheets. Furthermore, data extraction from sources like CAP reports will be required, followed by their integration into existing spreadsheets.
  • Note: A fresh perspective, distinct from the regular ADWR viewpoint, would be invaluable to ensure the reports are universally comprehensible.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A keen interest in water resource management and policymaking.
  • Familiarity or a willingness to learn GIS tools and software.
  • Strong analytical skills with an eye for detail.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with a flair for report writing and proofreading.
  • Experience with Google Drive, Adobe, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects by setting priorities with excellent follow-through
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and written format

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Candidates must be enrolled in school and pursing a degree in Hydrology, Water Resource Management, Geology, Geography, Environmental Studies, or related field.
