Arizona Auditor General. As an Accounting Compliance Evaluator, you will use your knowledge of accounting and internal controls to educate and provide guidance to local governments such as school districts, charter schools, counties, community college districts, and cities and towns. As part of that responsibility, you will research accounting, internal control, and compliance questions to develop technical guidance and provide assistance to the local governments. You will work with a team to prepare and present workshops, webinars, and trainings to assist local governments in developing strong internal controls to safeguard and account for the public monies they spend. You will also review school district financial and compliance audits to evaluate districts’ internal controls and determine when additional follow-up is needed to ensure that districts address weaknesses identified in their audits. You may also examine expenditure limitation reports of local governments to determine if their spending was within constitutional limits.

Travel may be 5 to 10 percent of the time, but is typically far less. For example, you may travel 2 to 3 days a few times a year to rural communities and small school districts. Experience in this division meets the experience requirements for CPA certification.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees currently work a hybrid in-person/telecommuting schedule. This schedule is subject to change. Additionally, the Office has implemented safety guidelines and protocols to help ensure everyone's safety.

Job Duties:

Typical assignments include:

• reviewing audit reports and financial statements
• researching and answering accounting and compliance questions
• preparing and presenting workshops
• reviewing impact of new laws on local governments
• determining compliance with laws and regulations
• preparing working papers
• developing and communicating findings and recommendations
• analyzing data using software applications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Minimum requirement:

B.S. degree in Accounting, or the equivalent, with at least 24 completed semester hours of accounting and a minimum 3.0 GPA in accounting classes. Starting salary: $50,000 - $53,800. SIGN-ON BONUS $2,000
Preferred: Master’s degree in Accounting, or 150 equivalent hours, with a minimum of 36 completed semester hours of accounting, or CPA license. Starting salary: $53,000 - $56,800. SIGN-ON BONUS $2,000

The ideal applicant will also have the following:

• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Access.
• A willingness to travel during the week approximately 5-10 percent of the time.
• Availability for limited travel to conduct out-of-town review work and presentations.
