This position manages the Payroll & Travel Services Unit, which is responsible for payroll and travel for the Department. Distributes and directs the workflow of subordinates equitably. Maintains an internal control structure for payroll and travel, ensures that all employee's time records and travel documents are entered into the payroll system before cut off time. Responsible for reconciling any out of balance transactions for payroll and travel affecting the department's general ledger. Resolves questions and problems presented by internal and external customers, recognize public and constituent issues and identifies actions to address such issues, encompassing other ADOT groups and functions. Manages and oversees the accurate processing and calculation of wages, benefits, and deductions. Works closely with Human Resources to coordinate payroll related inquiries.
This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (Two (2) days per week in the office/hoteling).

Supervise the processing of payroll using the AZ360 system. Ensure that all time records for the department have been entered before the cut off, work closely with the General Accounting Office on any changes to payroll and ensure that all internal stakeholders are aware of all changes.
Audit payroll to ensure employees have not been over or under paid. Develop/produce reports to select employees timesheets for auditing. Prepare amendments to correct any errors discovered. Evaluate, analyze and prepare manual journal entries for payroll rejects to ensure proper allocation to appropriate funding.
Supervise the auditing and processing of travel reimbursements for employees of the department. Ensure that staff are aware of any changes to the state travel policy. Interpret and review all travel anomalies. Monitor that travel documents are being processed according to goal reviewing the monthly travel measurements.
Knowledge of:
• State's human resource system and how to navigate the system to research and answer employee questions, enter, process, research travel documents, and modify and run reports.
• Experience with using automated accounting systems.
• Microsoft Excel with extensive knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel to interpret data (i.e. pivot tables, lookups, data validation, formulas, functions) for preparing spreadsheets for use in payroll, travel, and for assisting customers.
• Methodology for correctly calculating information regarding employee paychecks, and dollar amounts on travel documentation.
• The Arizona State Payroll/Travel Policy, and Personnel Rules.
• Google Suite.

A Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting from an accredited college or university; OR a Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of 24 semester hours of accounting courses; AND a minimum 3 years previous relevant work experience.
Understanding of automated accounting systems, spreadsheet applications such as Excel and other analytical tools used for reporting, compiling, heavy analysis, comparative analyses, etc.
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
