Job Summary:

Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) is seeking 2 paid interns to assist with investigating historic watering uses in various watersheds around Arizona and potentially assist with field investigations of these uses.

Job Duties:

Intern duties: Analyze aerial imagery and topographic maps to identify various types of water use claims using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Assist with the field inspections and surveys of stockponds using small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS or drones) and a sonar device. Search databases and provide reports. Other duties as assigned.

Some overnight travel may be required during weekdays. Some field work will be in remote locations. Strong commitment to collaboration, field safety, and teamwork.

Schedule: Hours will vary from 19  hours per week up to 40 hours per week. 

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro experience preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret aerial imagery and topographic maps.
  • Familiar with the Public Land Survey System (PLSS).
  • Ability to review historic documents and translate information into a spreadsheet or database format
  • Ability to perform field work, operate field tablets, and assist with collecting global positioning system (GPS) coordinates using real-time kinematic (RTK) equipment and handheld GPS devices.
Selective Preference(s):

Candidates must be enrolled in school and pursing a degree in GIS, Hydrology, Water Resource Management, Geology, Geography, or related field.

This position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.

Retirement:

Positions in this classification may participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Please note, enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment if meets ASRS retirement criteria. The current rate is 12.29%
