Job Summary:

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office State Government Division/Education & Health Section is seeking an Assistant Attorney General. This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.

Job Duties:

This attorney will provide a full range of legal services to State Education Agencies; including and especially to the State Board of Education and Professional Practices Advisory Committee. The attorney represents the State of Arizona and/or education agencies in administrative hearings, litigation matters, appeals, and Board meetings involving the investigation and discipline of certificated and non-certificated persons who allegedly engage in immoral or unprofessional conduct or misconduct otherwise prohibited by statute or rule. The attorney provides written and verbal legal advice, may review proposed agency rules and policies, and provide other legal services as needed. Additionally, the attorney will aid on complex litigation matters.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of identifying and analyzing issues and researching applicable law and facts;
Knowledge of drafting legally sufficient pleadings and motions, and developing appropriate responses;
Knowledge of conducting and responding to discovery and conducting factual investigations;
Knowledge of drafting and reviewing legally sufficient agreements;
Knowledge of Rules of Procedure for state and federal courts, and administrative proceedings;
Knowledge of the basic principles of the state legislative and rulemaking processes, including assisting client in promulgating and reviewing rules;
Knowledge of Open Meetings and public records law;
Knowledge of ethical standards applicable to government lawyers and public employees;
Knowledge of relevant statutes, regulations, and court decisions pertaining to education law, with particular emphasis on knowledge related to clients' needs.
Skill in analyzing and resolving legal issues, by applying correct legal principles to particular fact situations;
Skill in conducting legal research;
Skill in preparing correspondence, memoranda and legal pleadings, motions and discovery (with minimal supervision);
Skill in communicating effectively with clients, supervisor, other Assistant Attorneys General, outside counsel and the public;
Skill in representing clients effectively before administrative and judicial decision-makers;
Skill in negotiating effectively with other attorneys and opposing parties.
Ability to manage a changing case-load and effectively and efficiently prioritize tasks.
Ability to identify, research, and analyze legal issues;
Ability to use Westlaw and other computer-based methods of legal and factual research; use Microsoft Word and understand use of other agency software;
Ability to prepare correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, and other motions with minimal supervision;
Ability to prepare agreements and contracts;
Ability to apply appropriate ethical rules in daily practice;
Ability to exercise good judgment;
Ability to travel within and outside Arizona, including overnight stays.

Selective Preference(s):

Excellent legal research and writing skills; experience in evidentiary hearings/trials in administrative proceedings or trial court.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

• Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
• Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.
• Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.
The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.
