Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) will primarily assist the Director of Nursing Services (DON) in operating the Nursing Department of the Tucson Arizona State Veteran Home (T-ASVH) a skilled nursing facility. The ADON will be responsible for clinical outcomes of the facility and oversees nursing practices of the Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants. The ADON will also establish and manage facility-wide nursing care indicators, ensuring that the facility complies with federal and state guidelines governing the outcome of Veteran/Member care. Additionally, the ADON will be responsible for incorporating a cultural focus on Veteran/Member-centered care in the performance of job duties to include managing supervisory staff responsible for scheduling and assigning duties to nursing personnel.

Job Duties:

This position will...

  • Supervise and manage the use of scheduled staff throughout the facility to ensure proper use of resources, adequate staff coverage, and competency of assigned staff.
  • Evaluate the quality and outcomes of critical nursing functions as they pertain to Veteran/Member care; take necessary actions to train and supervise staff to ensure that all standards of care are met on a daily basis.
  • Apply working knowledge of all applicable regulatory requirements to evaluate comprehensive functions of the Nursing Department and institutes corrective action whenever deficiencies are identified.
  • Participate and assume leadership role as assigned on committees and task forces which may include Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Pharmacy, Incidents/Accidents, Admissions, and Safety.
  • Participate in the development policies and procedures and ensure compliance with federal, state, and VA regulations and facility policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Human Resources activities related to interviewing, selection, performance evaluations, coaching/counseling and administering disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Respond to and takes appropriate action regarding emergent issues that involve allegations of abuse, neglect/mistreatment of residents, fire or police involvement, and elopements; and ensures the Director of Nursing Services and/or Administrator is immediately informed of developing situations.
  • Provide assistance on units or with supervision as required; and may act on behalf of the Director of Nursing Services in their absence.
  • Be actively involved in AMS processes such as Huddle Boards, Problem Solving, Job Breakdown Sheets, Success Tracking, and Standardized work.
  • Participated full in the QAPI process, the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Program mandate by CMS, which incorporates AMS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

This position will have…

Knowledge of:

  • Clinical management of moderate to complex medical conditions found within a skilled nursing facility
  • Employee management issues related to the specific demands of a nursing home environment, including scheduling, training, supervision, and application of nursing practices
  • Relevant regulations as they pertain to the nursing home, including Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other standards
  • Regulatory requirements and how to complete resident assessments; Minimum Data Sets and the design and implementation of resident care plans
  • Human resources functions including recruiting, interviewing, training, coaching/counseling and taking disciplinary action
  • Design and implementation of systems related to workflow, scheduling, quality assurance functions and tracking the frequency and prevalence of quality indicators within the nursing home environment

Skill in:

  • Managing systems, functions, material/supply resources, human resources and nursing practice
  • Assessment and planning appropriate medical interventions, especially as they pertain to quality indicators such as pressure sores, nutrition, dehydration, incontinence, therapies, end of life issues and appropriate use of medications
  • Fundamental nursing that may be used on an intermittent basis when providing nursing care or supervising and assessing the work and practice of other nursing staff
  • Problem solving in areas of complex or multi-faceted issues as they relate to nursing care and practice, internal/external resources and important family/resident issues
  • Management/leadership skills
  • Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels
  • Communication approaches/techniques, including the effective use of English in oral and written form, commutation styles effective in meeting or conference settings and approaches useful in communicating with culturally diverse populations

The ability to:

  • Learn and apply agency policies and procedures
  • Act professionally and compassionately with both internal and external contacts
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Must possess an active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona
  • This position is subject to the vaccination requirements outlined in CMS Interim Final Rule - Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination (published November 5, 2021) (86 FR 61555)
  • Current Negative Tb skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last 6 months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or tuberculosis
  • Must be able to obtain and retain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • This position is required to drive in the course of State business, and requires possession of a current, valid state-issued driver's license
