Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for an Assistant Metrologist for the Weights and Measures Services Division. This position is located in our Glendale AZ office.

The Division’s primary mission is to promote equity and fairness of Arizona commerce involving weighing or measuring for commercial purposes by regulating and supporting businesses in a manner that protects both the buyers and sellers interests. The Division carries out its mission by maintaining the State standards of weight and measure based on national standards maintained by the Federal government, licensing weighing and measuring devices used in Arizona, conducting a wide variety of inspection programs to protect the marketplace, and auditing measuring devices and enforcing the statutes, rules, and regulations governing their use.

This position will perform complex, technical evaluation of equipment and standards used by state agencies, industry and licensees in the performance of their duties relating to weighing and measuring under the supervision of the State Metrologist.

You will be required to attend training and pass training goals as mandated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM). Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Duties:

Duties to include but not limited to:

• Assist with Administrative responsibilities including participation in the development of the Metrology annual business plan, procurement of required equipment, supplies and services related to the Metrology Lab, including obtaining bids, complying with state procurement law and recommending awards, and overseeing facilities management.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of laboratory technical policies and procedures for the Metrology Laboratory, quality assurance policies and procedures for the Metrology Lab, record keeping, documentation and national accreditation for the Lab.
• Preparation of management reports at department and national level for review. Assist with the evaluation of work performance of other state Metrology Laboratory procedures and policies and report and report to National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, NIST Handbook 143 and NIST Handbook 150 standards; writing; communication and time management skills; mass/volume metrology, project management, and program development; National Institute of Standards and Technology for various scales, meter and pump manufacturers; state budgeting process; state strategic planning process and designing business plans; performance monitoring; procurement laws and procedures; facility HVAC requirements and other facility management policies and procedures; National requirements for Metrology Lab certification; PC software and programmed software for the Department databases, general systems design principles; data security principles.

Skills in:
Complex analytical work, written and verbal communications; operating precision technical lab equipment; mathematical calculations; excellent customer service for internal and external customers.

Ability to:
Ability to do complex analytical work, written and verbal communications; ability to multi-task; operating precision technical lab equipment; mathematical calculations; ability to work with varying levels of staff and customers. Prioritize work load. Ability to pass Division administered Microsoft Excel and physical evaluations.

Retirement:

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Mandatory condition of Employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in statue. Current contribution rate is 12.00%. Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.
