Job Summary: To conduct highly complex office and field Individual Income tax audits using acceptable audit methods and procedures. Collects and analyzes data; plans and organizes audit procedures; examines and reviews financial and other records in order to prepare detailed reports on audit findings. Works closely with IT department in establishing analytics. May require travel including overnight stays.
Job Duties: Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct independent and objective individual income tax audits of considerable complexity. Prepare high-quality written and oral reports to communicate work results that meet professional standards for clarity and completeness. Develop audit programs; work closely with IT in establishing analytics.
  • Perform analysis and interpretations, prepare write-ups regarding tax audits on every aspect of the individual income, partnership, and S-Corp tax returns. Testify at hearings held in the Department, at the BOTA, or at court hearings outside the Department as needed by the Appeals Section.
  • Prepare work papers, audit reports, and weekly reports.
    Assist with on-the-job training of new auditors and ongoing training for audit staff. Answer questions, explain and interpret statutes and tax rulings.
  • Advise and train for new policies and procedures as required.
  • Actively promote teamwork and customer service within the section.
  • Help to provide solutions to questions and/or problems, thinking creatively and proactively regarding new issues.
  • Attend periodic workshops or training sessions to improve knowledge and skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of:
  • Arizona Revised Statutes, federal code, rules and regulations pertaining to income taxes; federal and state tax documents; principles and practices of general accounting and auditing.

Skilled In:

  • Analyze, interpret and apply the Arizona income tax code, federal code, rules, regulations and policies of the department.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Able to effectively train others.

Ability to:

  • Interact and work well with others; ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities.
  • Complete and assemble audit work papers and compose clear and concise audit reports.
  • Learn and apply LEAN concepts, principles, and tools used to create and deliver perspectives with the fewest resources with continuous problem-solving.
Selective Preference(s): The ideal candidate for this position will have:
• At least two years experience as an Auditor or equivalent.
• Bachelor's Degree in accounting or closely related field preferred. Experience with Continuous Improvement or LEAN preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirements: Valid driver's license.

Candidates for this position will be required to submit Tax Filing Records, Employment Verification Check, and Fingerprints that will be used to check criminal history records from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
