The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long-term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness for our patients and creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery. Treatment is individualized with goals that focus on education about an illness, instilling hope and improving one's overall quality of life. The Arizona State Hospital has a wide range of positions available, from our direct care staff, Nurses and Behavioral Health Technicians to Social Workers, Rehabilitation Specialist and Security to name a few. The Arizona State Hospital also offers 12 hour shifts for our Direct Care staff as well as some alternative work schedules, flexible hours for non-direct care staff. The Psychiatrist will be responsible for providing in-patient specialty psychiatric care to patients admitted to the Arizona State Hospital including: performing diagnostic examinations, prescribing medications, developing behavioral plans, monitoring care and progress of the patient toward treatment and recovery goals; leading a multi-disciplinary team, overseeing the work of the team in developing and implementing a plan of care, working with outpatient teams, the patient, families and community providers of care to coordinate a continuum of care for assigned patients; completing inpatient documentation, preparation of reports for legal and administrative purposes; participating in hospital committees and in the development of policies and procedures and standards for mental health program services; working with other professionals in a recovery model including nurses, social workers, psychologists, rehabilitation staff, and other physicians and professional including physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

 

Job Duties:

- Performs diagnostic examinations, prescribes medications, and monitors care and progress of patients toward treatment and recovery goals.
- Conducts psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment of seriously mentally ill patients committed to ASH.
- Provides leadership for multidisciplinary treatment team and oversees the work of the team in developing and implementing a plan of care.
- Works with other professionals in recovery model including nurses, social workers, psychologists, rehabilitation staff, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants. Attends hospital committees and medical staff meetings.
- Completes required documentation, prepares reports for legal and administration purposes.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
- Standards of psychiatric care including detailed understanding of the process and standards for the diagnosis, treatment and management of mental disorders and current knowledge of evidence based treatment of psychiatric illnesses.
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.

Skill In:
- Psychotherapeutic and psychopharmaccologic skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Work experience in leading a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Organization and time management skills.
- Basic computer skills.

Ability:
- Maintain a positive and effective working relationship with all levels of hospital staff and other professionals.

Selective Preference(s):

- Ideal candidate will have experience working with the seriously mentally ill.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

- Requires an MD or DO from an accredited school of medicine; completion of a residency program in Psychiatry, and board eligibility or board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

- Must possess a medical license to practice in the State of Arizona.

- Must possess a valid level one fingerprint clearance card issues pursuant to A.R.S.41-1758.07 or must apply for a level one fingerprint clearance card within seven working days after beginning employment.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27 week wait period for contributions to begin.
