Job Summary:

A Child Safety Specialist offers valuable support and assistance to children and families in need. This role will require good time management and critical thinking skills. This is a fast paced environment which requires organization, a high degree of expertise and skill in maintaining established quality and accuracy in work assignments.

Job Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Department of Child Safety (DCS) Program Supervisor, this position manages the work flow of placement referrals, to find appropriate placement for the children coming in to DCS custody, completes tracking logs, and support staff that engage in child safety services.
• Evaluate incoming referrals to select appropriate placement according to departmental and regional policies pertaining to child protective services
• Review and evaluate welfare assessments, intervention plans, and placement plans to ensure child safety and compliance with policy, procedures, and statutes
• Respond to and resolve problems presented by internal and external customers
• Attend staff meetings and trainings
• Produce, utilize, and send reports

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
• State and federal child welfare legislation
• The potential effects of cultural differences on family dynamics
• The roles and responsibilities of child welfare professionals including: courts, law enforcement, hospitals, schools, mental and physical healthcare providers, and community agencies or resources.
• Physical and behavioral indicators of abuse, neglect, and mental health disturbances
• Crisis intervention protocol
• Conflict resolution techniques
• Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Policies and procedures of Guardian software
Skills in:
• Verbal and written communication
• problem solving
• Establishing and maintaining work relationships with children, their families and court representatives
• Public speaking
• Preparing accurate and detailed documentation of reported information

Ability to:
• Sitting for long periods of time
• Maintain professional boundaries
• Work with a team
• Prepare detailed documentation of client and professional contracts to ensure that records accurately convey reported information and minimize misrepresentation
• Recognize indicators of abuse or neglect
• Work various shifts when needed
• Perform after hours duties


Pre-Employment Requirements:

• Applicants must have a Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, OR have five (5) years of experience as a DCS Case Aide
• Successfully pass a writing exam and an oral interview

Successfully clear background and employment reference checks
• Possess a valid Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
• Have a valid Arizona driver license and clear 39 month Motor Vehicle Report check (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12)
• Current, valid state-issued driver license
• Current vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver license record checks, required to maintain acceptable driving records and complete any required driver training.

Critical Response Stipend

The Arizona Department of Administration has made Federal funds available for DCS employees that are performing client-facing work in the field. These funds are a temporary stipend and applies to select DCS positions only.  The stipend is an additional 10% of the current hourly rate of pay.  This temporary stipend is available through June 30, 2022.


Bi-Lingual Stipend

In an effort to better serve our communities, DCS offers a Bi-Lingual Stipend to all interested and eligible DCS Employees who successfully complete a language proficiency exam.  Qualifying employees will receive a $500 annual stipend paid in equal increments.

All Child Safety Specialist positions participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
Enrollment eligibility becomes effective after 27 weeks of state employment.
