Job Summary:

The Arizona Office of Tourism is seeking a Director of Research to oversee the development and implementation of tourism industry and marketing research programs for the State. The Director of Research researches data in order to detect trends for tourism-related activities and makes strategic recommendations to the agency based in research. The ideal candidate will possess experience providing research analysis and guidance for strategic plan development, marketing strategy, and public/industry relations.

Job Duties:

-Oversee all responsibilities related to management of AOT’s role as a central clearinghouse for tourism-related data. Oversee activities in acquisition, analysis, and communication of tourism data. Make strategic recommendations to the agency based in research.

-Conduct analyses and develop the scope of work for market research studies supporting key marketing initiatives.

-Management of division operations including budgeting and procurement. Annually review the scope of work with research vendors, make adjustments as needed based on current needs and budget. Manage direct report(s) including 1:1 coaching.

-Lead the agency’s performance management activities. Coordinate with Executive Team and strategic planner to determine strategic objectives, assist divisions with determining measurement goals, and coach staff through problem-solving exercises.

-Make presentations/speeches on research results pertaining to AOT and the tourism industry to constituents and industry partners as well as at conferences, community meetings, and colleges/universities.

Knowledge of:
-Tourism industry in Arizona.
-Strategic planning, market research and marketing initiatives.
-Budgeting and procurement.
-Working with vendors, adjusting contracts as needed based on business needs.
-Performance management activities.
-Staff coaching and development.

Skills in:
-Management, program planning, providing direction and decision making.
-Relationship building and networking with a diverse population of organizations.
-Strong oral & written communication skills.
-Writing and analyzing data received through a variety of resources, drawing conclusions and making appropriate recommendations.
-Excellent public speaking time management and analytical skills

Abilities to:
-Instruct, explain, persuade, negotiate, and facilitate.
-Self direct and exercise independent judgment and meet performance standards with limited supervision.
-Work effectively with peers, subordinates and supervisors.

Selective Preference(s):

Minimum 3 years previous research experience and/or a 4-year college degree in business, public administration, marketing, tourism and recreation management, or related field.
