The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long-term behavioral health care. Job Summary:

The Director of Training and Development will oversee and participate in all aspects of the hospital training program for the Arizona State Hospital, including but not limited to new employee orientation, review/refresher trainings, hands-on competency demonstrations, and unit/department-based training. The position will conduct training needs assessments and confer with hospital leadership concerning training needs, develop a short and long term strategic plan for the training needs of the hospital, determine the education and development needs of the managers and executives within the hospital and develop and implement programs tailored to meet those needs, establish a staff development plan, create training curriculum, design training materials, research best practices, and establish/promote training strategies and standards throughout the hospital. The position will also involve the development of training reports, working closely with the hospital leadership to set goals and establish guidelines for the department, participating in performance improvement/quality assurance projects and in committee functions as appropriate/assigned. The position will provide and/or oversee training specific to licensed nursing, personnel and basic skills/didactic training to all levels of hospital staff- both in the classroom and at the unit/department level. The position will supervise training staff and ensure they possess and maintain knowledge and skills required for their position and the courses they instruct.

Job Duties:
  • Provide and/or oversee training specific to licensed nursing personnel and base skills/didactic; training to all levels of hospital staff, both in classroom and at the unit/department level.
  • Research training content, best practices, existing training materials, and audio visuals; write behavioral learning objectives; develop training evaluation processes, use appropriate and authorized databases (HRIS, MylearningPointe, and others utilized by the hospital) in the development of CBT courses and other self-teaching packets.
  • Supervise all training staff. Manage and direct subordinate staff (work assignments, setting priorities, hiring, discipline, provide training, approving leave requests, and preparing evaluations). Ensure training staff possess and maintain knowledge and skills required for their position and the courses they instruct.
  • Interact with customer groups to determine curriculum needs; maintain quality from the customer's perspective.
  • Develop a short and long term strategic plan for the training needs of the hospital. Determine the education and development needs of the managers and executives within the hospital.
  • Develop and implement programs tailored to meet those needs.
  • Establish and promote standard training strategies and standards throughout the hospital.
  • Oversee all aspects of training provided, including but not limited to new employee orientation, review/refresher training, hands-on competency demonstrations, and unit/department-based trainings.
  • Develop training reports and work closely with the hospital leadership to set the goals and establish guidelines for the department.
  • Participate in performance improvement and quality assurance projects. Participate in hospital committee functions as appropriate/assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
− Instructional design concepts, principles, theories and application, adult learning principles, and supervisory techniques/styles.
− Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Platform.
− Typical indemnity and safety topics such as sexual harassment, diversity, first aid, CPR,
and back safety.
− Basic professional skills such as project management, time management; planning, conflict resolution and active listening.
− Distance learning techniques.
− Expertise in development and/or training/education using CBT authoring software.
− Experience and/or training/education using a wide variety of Microsoft Office/Google
products.
− Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and
Lean methodologies.

Skills In:
− Supervisory experience and/or participation on a self-managed team and/or education in
supervisory topics.

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field from an accredited college or university and 5 years of healthcare related work experience, preferably in Behavioral Health.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an administrative or supervisory level position.
  • Experience in working with regulatory agency rules/regulations/standards
  • Experience in Development and implementation of policies, procedures, educational programs, and training materials.
  • Master's degree in Education preferred
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07.
  • Driving is required for State Business.
    - Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).

Retirement:
