DEPATMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE MANAGEMENT

In partnership with local, county, state, and federal agencies, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) protects Arizona’s people by: providing coordination and resource response for the suppression and management of wildland fire; delivering education to aid in wildland fire prevention; providing integrated management strategies, technical assistance and information through various Department programs; collaborating in forest restoration projects; and ensuring fire and life safety through permitting, plan reviews and building inspections.

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, this position will serve as part of an engine crew suppressing wildland fire performing general project work as assigned to include fuels reduction work, fire prevention presentations, and other duties.

Job Duties:
  • Responds to wildland fires, and all risk incidents.
  • Performs all aspects of wildland fire control, fuels mitigation including line construction, line preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop up.
  • Collects fire weather data, fuel and/or soil moisture samples, maps projects, and maintains records.
  • Under supervision, performs maintenance checks and services of apparatus and equipment to include vehicle condition, condition of hose, chainsaws, other firefighting equipment; ensures inventory levels and conditions are kept to standards on assigned apparatus; ensures bay and work space is kept organized, neat, and clean; housekeeping and maintenance needs as required.
  • Participates in physical training conducted by crew personnel to ensure they remain physically fit to maintain physical fitness for an arduous rating as required by NWCG.
  • Under supervision, operates assigned fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Is responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland fire, fuels mitigation and prescribed fire situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of assigned fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  • Basic wildland firefighting duties and tasks as taught in BWFF training classes.
  • Safe chainsaw operations.

Skills in:

  • The use and operation, maintenance, repair and care of wildland firefighting hand tools, chain saws, small engines, vehicles and facilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Manual labor skills.

Ability to:

  • Read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Perform heavy lifting and have an adequate physical fitness level to work on the fireline per NWCG PMS3 101-1.
  • Work as a cohesive team member.
Selective Preference(s):

Valid Arizona Drivers License

Pre-Employment Requirements:

NWCG Firefighter Type 2 Qualified within one week of hire
