Job Summary:

The Environmental Engineering Specialist (Wastewater and Stormwater Engineer) will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating environmental problems, reports, facility designs, plans and cost estimates in accordance to Arizona Rules and Regulations. This position will perform engineering duties in the prevention, control and remediation of environmental pollution using research, design, and technical assistance. Through first-hand experience, the position will guide or direct staff or permittees toward implementation of treatment technologies and control measures that prevent, remove or reduce pollutants/contaminants from point source discharges to further protect human health and the environment. This is a flexible position, you will have the option to telework or work virtually within Arizona. 

Job Duties:

Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide technical assistance to the regulated community, staff, and the public in regards to public storm and wastewater system treatment technologies, operations and maintenance;
• Participate in site visits, data collection, inspections and investigations at permitted facilities to evaluate operations;
• Collaborate with permit writers and inspectors regarding performance of best practices and make recommendations that improve environmental outcomes;
• Perform engineering calculations to assure necessary treatment mechanisms are employed and sized appropriately for the problem being mitigated; and,
• Utilize Lean concepts to drive ongoing continuous improvement.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of environmental engineering standards and practices.
• Ability to review and evaluate Proprietary Products for applicants seeking product approval.
• Ability to problem solve and attention to detail.
• Ability to develop and write technical documentation.

Minimum Requirements:

• Level 3 - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering, along with five (5) years of experience. Master’s or Doctorate’s degree may substitute for 2 or 4 years of experience, respectively.
• Level 4 - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering, along with eight (8) years of experience. Master’s or Doctorate’s degree may substitute for 2 or 4 years of experience, respectively.
• Level 3 requires an EIT (Engineer in Training), Level 4 a Professional Engineering (PE) certification through the AZ Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization in a reciprocal jurisdiction is required.
