Job Summary:

Our Unit Manager for the Information and Support Unit (ISU) is responsible for managing the operating functions of the Unit within the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section. The Unit manages a variety of activities including data management and reporting, review of financial responsibility documentation, UST owner/operator determinations, UST tax refunds and exemption certificates, outreach to the regulated community, and electronic file management. You will be responsible for supervising up to eight staff members, including assigning work, setting priorities, monitoring and evaluating performance, and also developing and providing training for your team. The position is critical to maintaining Unit metrics, employee development, process improvements and Unit roles that branch across the UST Section. You will attend meetings with other supervisory/managerial staff to give and receive information and to participate in the discussion, problem resolution, and decision-making.

All ADEQ management positions champion continuous improvement projects within the Unit and recommend and implement programs or operational improvements; assist in the development of goals and strategies; develop policies and procedures related to environmental inspections, enforcement, compliance, and/or scientific studies; and manage the most complex or high-profile projects or assignments.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Strong people management skills are important for this position.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UST state/federal rules and statutes, the corrective action financial assistance programs offered by ADEQ, UST insurance policies, and UST financial responsibility are a plus.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn state and federal environmental compliance and enforcement protocols and their interpretations will also be valuable experience for the position.
Selective Preference(s):
  • A Bachelors’ degree in environmental science, environmental management, business management, environmental or chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, hydrology, geology, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of environmental experience in a regulatory agency, consulting, or private industry
  • 2 years of supervisory experience
