Job Summary:

The Environmental Science Specialist will serve a dual role: 50 percent of the role will be responsible for performing inspections at wastewater treatment plants, wastewater collection systems and mining sites as needed in order to determine compliance against permit requirements. The other 50 percent will be responsible for outreach and support for the regulated community. This may include setting up training and outreach evens with the regulated community to improve their understanding of environmental rules and regulations. This position will also work to support compliance officers as well analyze and act on data that is reported to ADEQ as required by the facility’s operating permit. Additional duties include reviewing and evaluating environmental permit applications, reports, facility designs, plans and cost estimates. in accordance to Arizona Rules and Regulations.

Job Duties:

• Conducts inspections at regulated sites, file reviews and complaint inspections throughout the state of Arizona with the expectation of travel across the state requiring overnight stays.
• Provides compliance assistance in the field and in the office in order to increase compliance at the time of inspection.
• Works with permitted facilities to reduce the number of open compliance cases, and reduce the time required to return facilities to compliance.
• Reduces Aquifer Quality Limit (AQL)/Discharge Limit (DL) exceedances through inspections, outreach and compliance assistance.
• Accelerates resolution of issues through collaboration and compliance assistance.
• Provides innovative solutions to reoccurring compliance issues.
• Utilize Lean concepts to drive ongoing continuous improvement

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of wastewater system design and operation
• Knowledge of Agency policies and processes, interpret State and Federal environmental regulations, environmental sciences and research, AZ sources of pollution, best practices for preventing the release of pollutants, environmental research, investigation techniques and statistical analysis
• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks; to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication
• Experience in project management, MS Office, customer service/outreach and aptitude for problem solving preferred
• Strong organizational skills and ability to schedule, conduct and manage multiple projects at the same time
• Strong communications skills and ability to work effectively in a team based collaborative environment

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering, environmental/earth science, environmental management/studies, and/or sustainability.
• Level 1: Requires 0-1 years experience Bachelor’s degree
• Level 2: Requires 2 years’ experience (Masters degree may substitute for 2 years exp)
