This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangement).

Job Summary:

The Environmental Scientist will function as a Project Manager for the Corrective Action Unit (CAU). The individual in this role will ensure that leaking UST (Underground Storage Tank) cases are progressing towards closure, ensure sites are adequately characterized, and remediation is implemented when necessary with assistance from technical review staff. This position is responsible for coordinating all correspondence with the responsible parties, property owners, and consultants to ensure the project milestones are achieved and corrective actions are being conducted according to statute. Furthermore, the PM will work closely with TICE (Tank Inspection Compliance Enforcement) when enforcement is necessary. The PM will be expected to also gain cross-training experience from technical staff regarding remediation and site characterization. Throughout the facility’s corrective action process, the PM will collect, synthesize, study, report, and relay recommended actions from the technical reviewers based on data derived from field observations, inspections of facilities, file reviews, or measurement/observations of air, soil or water and other sources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

● Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks, lead and work collaboratively in teams to complete remediation on leaking UST sites; synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly; build strong relationships inside and outside of the agency; and develop and write technical documentation
● Knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations pertaining to hazardous waste, environmental sciences and research, AZ sources of pollution, best practices for preventing the release of pollutants, investigation techniques and statistical analysis, Agency policies and processes
● Ability to work virtually (in either Tucson or Phoenix), or part-time telecommute if located in Phoenix

Selective Preference(s):

● Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering, hydrology, hydrogeology, geology or environmental science
● Level 3: Requires 5 years relevant experience and a professional registration or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification or ability to obtain it within a year of employment.
● Level 4: Requires 8 years relevant experience and professional registration as a Project Management Professional (PMP) or ability to obtain it within a year of employment.
● Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience, Doctorate may substitute for 4 years of experience for both level 3 & 4.
● Professional registration as a geologist, engineer or scientist may be used to substitute for project management certification.
● Driver's license - Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license is required
● Working experience with practical aspects of project management
● Proficiency with Project Management body of knowledge
● Strong customer services skills, excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
