This Equipment Repair Lead Technician position offers a great opportunity for you to combine your journey level mechanical experience, fleet maintenance leadership, and your excellent diagnostic skills in maintaining the Light/Medium/Heavy Equipment Fleet for ADOT. Anticipated hiring salary is $23.7975 hourly ($49,499 annually) with a potential to earn up to $30.7206 hourly ($63,899 annually) when ASE Triple Master Certified Technician status is obtained.

Salary: $38,000.00 - $52,000.00 

The anticipated salary for this position is: $49,499.84

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for assisting the shop supervisor in day to day operations of the EQS Avondale Shop. The working Lead Technician performs Preventative Maintenance (PM’s) and repairs, schedules vehicles for service and repair, and oversees preventative maintenance and repairs.

Job Duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assign work, train and guide Repair Technicians on proper usage of automotive diagnostic tools/equipment.

  • Provide oversight and guidance to Repair Technicians and Service Assistants on daily workloads (scheduled/unscheduled) and maintenance priorities, to ensure that personnel are tasked in a manner that meets the standards of the monthly performance metrics, and customer service standards.

  • Conducts quality control and safety inspections, prepares labor reporting documents, and consults with customers.

  • Ensure vehicle/equipment assets are serviced and/or repaired in accordance with Federal, State, ADOT, Interagency Service Agreements and EQS Policy/Procedures.

  • Use automated fleet management programs to review shop automotive work orders, maintenance reports and other related data. 

  • Assist and/or chair monthly shop safety meetings. Review work orders in work finished status for accuracy and close in a timely manner.

  • Operate vehicles and/or equipment requiring a driver’s license and/or CDL.

  • This position requires flexibility with work hours and days/nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate emergency repair work and varied schedules.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:

  • Repairing/overhauling/troubleshooting mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems/components on medium-heavy duty vehicle/construction and off-road equipment

  • Operating principles of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines and emission control and light duty fuel systems

  • Vehicle and equipment power train system inspection

  • Electrical/electronic controls, hydraulic systems inspection and diagnosis and repair procedures

  • ADOT Environmental Policy and Procedures and Equipment Services Policies and Procedures are preferred

  • Equipment management principles including scheduled preventative maintenance and record keeping and PC Fleet Management Systems


Skills in:

  • Estimating time and cost of repair maintenance and PM work for a wide variety of automotive and heavy construction equipment

  • Preventative maintenance inspections

  • Projecting parts, supplies and staffing needs based on past usage and anticipated organizational activity changes

  • Scheduling/coordinating automotive/truck/heavy construction equipment service and repair to maximize utilization

  • Management oriented record keeping and report preparation


Ability to:

  • Lead and motivate employees and establish effective working relationships

  • Follow oral and written instructions

  • Interpret manufacturer’s service manuals

  • Utilize a PC and PC programs including a Fleet Management System

  • Manage time effectively

  • Pass a physical exam and lift 50 lbs from floor to waist, push/pull 90 lbs

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

Five years of journeyman level experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of automotive/light duty trucks; heavy  duty trucks and construction equipment to include some experience in a leadership role. Education/training from a certified/accredited automotive repair school may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for the experience, up to a maximum of two years.

Ideal candidate will have ASE certification and/or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck, Bus or Heavy Equipment Manufacturers certification.

MACS (Mobile Air Conditioning Society) Certification is required.

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

Successful candidate must have their own tools for the position.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Position requires a possession of a valid Class A CDL with a “N” endorsement or the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with “N” endorsement within the sixth month of employment. Must retain said license and endorsements during the period of employment. Additional endorsements may be required during the period of employment to meet shop mission requirements. Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all CDL holder’s.

Once a Class A permit is obtained, the selected employee will be required to register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment. Register by visiting https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/Register

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.  Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
