Manage and reduce fire risk to protect Arizona's people, communities, and wildland areas to champion the health of Arizona's natural resources. Job Summary:

The Forestry Technician conducts forest inventories and evaluates timber and other forest products; generates data for and contributes to the development of treatment plans and prescriptions; evaluates forest health and monitors for insect damage, disease and exotic species; tracks forestry projects and documents the effectiveness of treatments; determines the abundance of hazardous fuels and helps calculate fuel loading; designates and marks trees, marks boundaries and assists with the layout of forestry projects; assesses wildfire risk and contributes to the design of wildfire prevention strategies; provides technical assistance to peers and constituents; travels for extended periods throughout the state.

Job Duties:

• Collect and manage ecological data. Conduct forest resource surveys and inventories. Map soils and vegetation. Estimate fuel load and wildfire risk.

• Monitor forestry projects. Document the progress and effectiveness of the work of forestry crews. Generate data to report outcomes.

• Provide technical assistance related to forestry techniques, forest health, insect and disease impacts and hazardous fuels management.

• Provide customer service to peers, grantees and constituents.

• Maintain vehicles, equipment and work spaces.

• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

• Basic knowledge of forest ecology, preferable obtained through professional forestry education or experience in the forestry industry.
• Basic knowledge of forest resource management techniques and challenges.
• Knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, GIS and other programs.
• Basic knowledge of environmental and cultural laws and regulations.

Skills in:

• Communication skills, both oral and written.
• Listening skills, as a key to effective communication.
• Plant, insect and forest pathogen identification skills.
• Data collection and analysis skills, ecological monitoring skills.
• Skill in the use of forestry field instruments and programs.

Ability to:

• Speak, including public speaking.
• Walk, including in rugged and uneven terrain.
• Think creatively and critically.
• Read and write effectively.

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited school of Forestry or related natural resource program, or equivalent work experience. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations and regulatory processes

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid Arizona Driver's License. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
