This position will support the Southern Region of Arizona and the following fuel site locations Douglas, Grey Peak, Nogales, Oracle, Parker, Quartzsite, Robles Junction (3 Points), Safford, St David, Three Way, Tucson 22nd Street, Tucson Grant Rd, Tucson MVD, Willcox, and Yuma. The duty post may be based out of the nearest established equipment shop within this region closest to the selected applicant’s home address.

Extensive travel and overnight stays throughout the southern region is a requirement of the position. In some instances can be required to travel and assist with another area within the state for support. May also be required to answer calls on the weekend (during major storm events).

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

Salary: $35,000.00 - $48,000.00 

The anticipated salary is: $44,576.00 with a potential to earn up to $58,976.00 when ASE Triple Master Certified Technician status is obtained

Job Summary:

This position helps to ensure the safe and continued availability of ADOT fueling facilities located throughout an area identified as the Southern Region of the State of Arizona.

Job Duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform fuel site inspections, repairs on fuel appurtenances and preventative maintenance activities to include electronic fuel tank monitoring systems.

  • Train employees to become Class C fuel site operators (fuel attendants) at the different fuel locations to ensure there is an understanding on how to generally maintain and upkeep sites for compliance.

  • Helps to ensure fuel site regulatory compliance through reviewing fuel transactions, reports and other methods.

  • General oversight assistance with fuel site installation and removal. 

  • Use service work order systems for repair tracking and for environmental compliance requirements. 

  • Work on mechanical and electronic fueling equipment.

  • Extensive travel throughout the southern region of the state will be required to perform most duties. 

  • In some instances can be required to travel and assist with another area within the state for support. May also be required to answer calls on the weekend (during major storm events).

  • Some overnight stays may be required.

This position requires flexibility with work hours and days/nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate emergency repair work and varied schedules.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:

  • Thorough knowledge of normal operation of the equipment used in the day to day operation of the fueling process, essential to efficiently troubleshoot the equipment and facilitate the repair, design, and construction of fueling facilities.

  • Have a working knowledge of policies, procedures, installation, piping, and all aspects related to the construction and maintenance of petroleum storage and dispensing equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of Multi Force (MF) fuel controller system, Asset Works (FA Detail) work order system, and Veeder Root fuel tank monitoring systems.


Skills in:

  • The skill involved should include a high mechanical aptitude and field experience and requires a general understanding of the properties, dangers, and proper handling techniques of petroleum products.  


Ability to:

  • Comprehend the basic theory and function of electrical and electronic systems and successfully troubleshoot those systems. Also requires dexterity and the ability to safely handle and lift heavy objects.  

  • To pass a physical exam 

  • Ability to maintain detail and accuracy when performing repairs and record keeping.

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

This position requires a minimum of 2 years experience in the petroleum industry. Experience in the repair and operation of automotive fuel systems is preferred.

Must possess or be able to obtain Arizona Department of Weights and Measures Registered Service Representative (RSR) license (required to work on fuel pump meters), Veeder Root (VR) Technician Certification Level 1 and Level 2 within 12 months from the date of hire. Must retain licensing and certifications throughout the period of employment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
