Posting Details:

Salary:  Depending on background and experience: $130,000-$170,000

What You'll Do:
 
  • Provide sound legal guidance to the Auditor General and executive management group on an ad hoc basis as issues arise across the Office.
  • Prepare written and verbal advice to Office divisions on the laws that affect the agencies or political subdivisions that the Office audits, especially whether such entities act in a manner consistent with their respective statutory responsibilities.
  • Interact with auditees and their representatives to explain the legal basis for the Office’s position(s), and attend audit meetings with audit teams and auditees as needed.
  • Provide quality control of legal references in reports.
  • Review and draft contracts between the Auditor General and consultants, landlord, vendors, and contract auditors.
  • Represent the Auditor General in litigation, appeals, and hearings.
  • Inform the Auditor General about prominent issues and provide professional advice and recommendations when needed.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of Deputy General Counsel.
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the assignment. 
What You'll Need:
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona (include on resume the date[s]  of admission in Arizona and any other states).
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • 10 years’ experience in the practice of law, preferably in Arizona State government operations.
  • Experience with drafting and reviewing contracts, litigation, and appeals, and general experience with interpreting statutes.
  • Excellent analytical, research, critical thinking, time management, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to identify issues, analyze and articulate legal arguments, assess evidence, and communicate guidance to the Auditor General, executive management group, Office divisions, external auditees, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to make quick and independent decisions, solve problems, and work under pressure, and to appropriately apply professional ethical rules in daily practice.
  • Strong executive presence.
  • Strong interest in public service and improving State and local governments.
  • Willingness to work in-office daily.
