Performs an advanced level of sign fabrication by manufacturing roadway signs and other related traffic directing devices for use throughout the State highway network using screen printing and e-cutting equipment, design software, and works with the fabrication equipment for metal or metal and plastic composite signing materials.
Trains new sign fabrication personnel. Assists with customer service. Performs management duties including scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates work, inspection of completed work, training and guiding staff, use of equipment, signing of state and interstate roadways, maintaining routine environmental compliance, shop equipment maintenance and their required documentation, office administration, permit compliance, record keeping, work management reports, inventory and features tracking, budgeting, data entry, vehicle and equipment care and customer service.
Assists with the maintenance management performance system (PECOS) for section, including oversight of computer data entry, and oversight of material inventory. Processes work report requests and special reports requested by supervisors, superintendents, and managers. Assists unit and section to develop the annual work plan and budgets. Assists with the implementation of performance and disciplinary recommendations of sign factory employees. Responsible for using leadership skills and technical expertise to assist the work crews as needed to safely and efficiently fabricate highway sign products. Operates/trains others on hand tools, powered equipment, vehicles used by the sign factory to properly perform assigned work duties.
Monitors sign factory orders, crew work reports and materials for sign production that are within compliance with MUTCD and MOAS guidelines. Trains and continuously educates staff on the different types and grades of sign sheeting and other sign manufacturer materials such as film, inks, substrates, etc, and their recommended applications and procedures of use. Develops guidelines & procedures for the design and manufacturing process. Provides technical input for the purchase of new or replacement equipment, and developing strategies for addressing roadway sign deficiencies. Advises and assists in conducting reviews of equipment and materials used in the manufacturing process.
Conducts periodic inspections of highway signs to insure compliance with design criteria and current safety standards. Trains and continuously educates staff on safety procedures and proper use and storage of equipment and materials. Prepares sign orders for shipment by verifying SFO by Region, applying barcode to each sign package, (band and pack with foam) sorting by destination, palletize, inventory. Assists in loading and shipping. Tracks and figure square footage. Provides training and expertise to other employees engaged in Sign Factory skill sets. Accesses PECOS System entering daily work reports.
Investigates and resolves customer concerns, resolving problems or referring to the supervisor. Modifies routine procedures to make improvements, coordinates and oversees program activities. Coordinates administrative matters between business units, attend meetings and seminars. Responds to email and phone request/inquiries.
Knowledge of:
-Procedures, preventive maintenance, and minor repair or powered and non-powered tools and equipment used in signing and sign fabrication.
-Meeting procedures, documentation and customer relations.
-Methods and techniques of e-cutting and screen printing.
-Computer aided design and manufacturing (CADAM) with sign making programs like SignCAD, FlexiSIGN, Zund flat-bed cutters and Gerber table routers.
-Federal, State and Agency rules, regulations and specifications governing fabrication of roadway signs and other related directional devices.
-Procedures and practices established for work section.
-Knowledge of PeCoS time keeping system.
-Knowledge or Google Suite programs.
Skill in:
-Applying and making intermediate to advance level interpretations of federal, state and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations.
-Fabricating roadway signs and other related devices using metal, plastic, ink, ink solvents and adhesive-products in fabricating signs.
-In using powered and non-powered tools and equipment and performing proper and timely preventive maintenance.
-In screen printing and e-cutting processes.
-Using proper materials, and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods.
-In oral and written communication skills.

Two years of experience working as Highway Sign Fabricator Tech 3.
High School education or GED.
Certification in computer design software, Certification in e-cutting, weeding, image application, and/or sabre router operation.
Certification in screen printing or printing press operation, Forklift certification, Ability to use an arc-welder,
Qualified to use an oxyacetylene torch for cutting.
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
