Job Summary:
  • Performs a broad scope of advanced level sign fabrication work manufacturing roadway signs and other related traffic directing devices for use throughout the State highway network using screen printing and e-cutting equipment, design software, and works with the fabrication equipment for metal or metal and plastic composite signing materials.
  • Helps to maintain routine environmental compliance, shop, equipment maintenance, and their required documentation. -
  • Assists and trains new sign fabrication personnel.
  • Assists with customer service.
  • Completes sign factory logs and Crew Work Reports (CWR) for PeCos which document time and work performed.
Job Duties:
  • Operates powered/non-powered equipment and tools to fabricate signs and other traffic control devices. Maintains equipment including CAD sheeting cutters & routers, manual and automated squeeze roll applicators, automated screen presses, screen washers, dryers, welders, grinders, drill press, metal shears & cutter, radius punch, band and panel saws, sheeting slitter, material carts, forklifts & pallet jacks.

  • Measures and cuts sign blanks for sizes, shapes and radii to meet State and Federal specifications. Verifies that sizes cut, meet the Sign Fabrication Orders (SFO's) & the type of material needed (aluminum, Alucobond or other) for that type of sign (regulatory, warning or guide).
    Stores and prepares sign blanks for orders.

  • Interprets agency rules and regulations. Resolves problems or refers them to supervisor. With permission, modifies, routine procedures to make
    improvements. Fits and applies sheeting with squeeze roll applicators based on material manufactures specified processes, and State and Federal
    specifications for the type of signing ordered. Estimates the amount of materials needed for the size of order(s) and the materials on hand, for
    example: width on a roll and amount of material left on it.

  • Sets-up for and performs screen printing process using compatible ink and ink solvents, wash and dry the screens in automated screen washer and
    dryer. Loads, racks, or stacks sign panels on proper racks. Moves racks to controlled drying room to accelerate and assure proper drying of sign panels.

  • Performs sign layout to meet State and Federal specifications for font, size of letters, spacing, colors, borders and radii. Applies transfer tape and
    transfer electronically cut (e-cut) sign skin to sign panel or decal following mfr. and sign factory processes. Removes unneeded material from e-cut signs (weeding unfinished signs)

  • Prepares sign orders for shipment by verifying SFO by Region, applying bar code to each sign package, (band and pack with foam) sorting by
    destination, palletize, inventory. Assists in loading and shipping.

  • Investigates customers concerns, resolves problems or refers to the supervisor, suggests improvements to improve routine procedures. Attend
    meetings and seminars with lead or supervisor. Responds to phone requests and inquiries from customers. Assists in training new sign fabrication
    personnel in all Sign Factory Fabrication skill sets. Tracks and figures square or linear footage for all projects. Completes daily entries into PeCos.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in

  • Methods and techniques of fabricating roadway signs and other related directional devices using metal, plastic, ink, ink solvents and adhesive products used in sign fabrication work.
  • Intermediate Methods and techniques of e-cutting.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer aided design and manufacturing (CADAM) with sign making programs like SignCAD, FlexiSIGN, etc., Zund flat-bed plotter/cutters and Gerber table routers.
  • Intermediate knowledge of powered/non-powered tools and equipment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of methods and techniques of screen printing.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Federal, State and agency rules, regulations and specifications governing fabrication of roadway signs and other related directional

Skill in 

  • Skills in fabricating roadway signs and other related devices using metal, plastic, ink, ink solvents and adhesive-products in fabricating signs.
  • Skills in using powered/non-powered tools and equipment and performing proper and timely preventive maintenance.
  • Skills in screen printing and e-cutting processes.
  • Skills in oral and written communication and interpersonal relationships.
  • Skills in interpreting and applying Federal, State and agency rules, regulations and specifications governing fabrication of roadway signs and other related directional devices.

Ability in

  • Ability to use powered/non-powered tools and equipment to fabricate roadway signs and other related devices.
  • Ability to visually layout a sign so that the spacing is correct.
  • Ability to screen print and e-cut.
  • Ability to weld and do other metal work.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written communication.
Selective Preference(s):
  • Two years of experience equivalent to a Highway Sign Fabricator Tech 2
  • Certification in e-cutting, weeding, image application, and/or sabre router operation, Certification in screen printing or printing
    press operation, Forklift certification, Ability to use an arc-welder
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Valid Arizona Drivers license
  • High school education or GED.
