Hydrogeologist 3-4 - Project Manager

Job Summary:

As a Hydrogeologist with our Watershed Improvement Unit, you will join a team of scientists, hydrogeologists, and project managers who deliver impactful and rewarding watershed remediation projects that improve Arizona’s rivers and streams. Such remediation projects address acid mine drainage, legacy hardrock mining sites, discharging wells, and nonpoint source pollution. Ultimately, successful projects will delist impaired waterbodies under Clean Water Act Section 303(d).

You will be responsible for researching impacts to surface water quality; reviewing and interpreting hydrogeological and water chemistry data; investigating sources of surface water pollution, and leading remediation projects that improve surface water quality. The successful candidate will use education, experience, and skills in hydrogeology and project management to effectively lead remediation projects from source identification to closure and effectiveness monitoring.  Must reside in Phoenix, Arizona (will have the option to work remote/telecommute).

Job Duties:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned:
• Lead and manage remediation projects for impaired surface waterbodies by using project management methodologies related to scheduling, budgeting, contract management, stakeholder management, and risk identification and mitigation
• Coordinate with external contractors and ensure projects are within scope, schedule, and budget
• Provide technical expertise, as well as support and oversee hydrogeological and remediation designs, proposals, and plans
• Facilitate proper permitting and clearance for remediation projects with other state and federal agencies (i.e. Clean Water Act Section 404; National Historic Preservation Act; Endangered Species Act)
• Collect and evaluate field measurements like surface water samples, surface water flows, biocriteria samples, and XRF soil sampling
• Conduct field work and collect surface water quality samples; maintain and deploy sampling equipment; coordinate lab analysis and data entry; and synthesize results
• Utilize ADEQ’s visual management and Lean tools to effectively manage projects and measure progress

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of: hardrock mining; watershed planning and management; nonpoint source pollution; Clean Water Act, specifically sections 303(d) and 319; total maximum daily loads (TMDL); types of watershed plans; Arizona’s statutes and rules pertaining to surface water quality, particularly ARS Title 49, Chapters 1-2 and A.A.C. Title 18, Chapters 9 and 11; watershed ecology; water quality sampling methods; data quality assurance/control procedures; Arizona geology and waterbodies
• Skills in: problem-solving individually and in a group; customer service and client relations; written and oral communication; Lean practices; balancing multiple priorities and projects; data analysis and synthesis; contract oversight and management; project management; mapping and databases (i.e. ArcGIS)
• Ability to: translate and communicate complex jargon for general audience; understand and apply environmental rules and statues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks; conduct field work and sampling in remote locations with some overnight stays and in seasonal weather; safely drive state vehicle; resolve environmental issues

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or geosciences
• Level 3: 5 years’ experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience, Doctorate for 4 years of experience)
• Level 4: 8 years’ experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience, Doctorate for 4 years of experience)
• Certification: Geologist-in-Training or Professional Geologist registration or ability to obtain registration after employment is preferred for Level 3; Professional Geologist certification required for Level 4
