Job Summary:

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: writing, editing, proofreading and fact checking stories and other content for the print edition of the magazine, as well as the Arizona Highways website, books, calendars, newsletters and other ancillary materials, including marketing materials. The associate editor also plays a role in social media planning and management.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

Copy editing, project management, fact checking, and proofreading for the magazine, books, marketing materials and calendars.

Writing feature stories, other stories, web stories, captions and marketing content.

Social media planning and management. Corrections and management of contract proofreaders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
- Print and electronic media
- AP style and brand style guidelines
- Editing, copy editing, proofreading
- Narrative writing, journalistic writing, caption writing
- Fact checking
- Social media platforms

Skill in:
- Critically evaluates, analyzes and filters information resources
- Clearly communicates with contributors, editorial staff and leadership
- Retrieves, organizes, repackages and presents information efficiently
- Interviews, reports and writes professionally
- Manages complex projects, including text, graphics, photographs and more

Ability to:
- Works comfortably as a team member committed to excellence
- Strong writer for stories, headlines, captions and more
- Plans, prioritizes and focuses on critical deadlines
- Demonstrates flexibility and positivity in times of changing and sometimes immediate information needs

Selective Preference(s):

3+ years experience as a journalist, writer, editor, copy editor

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Bachelor's Degree or higher in journalism, mass communications, narrative writing or the equivalent.
