Job Summary:

Part-time Museum Educators are the main providers of visitor interaction at the Arizona Capitol Museum. They provide nearly all of the scheduled education experiences (tours) given to groups visiting the museum and half of the casual visitor interactions. They support the full-time museum staff as well, monitoring and setting up public use spaces. Educators will work four shifts, Monday-Thursday, totaling no more than 19.5 hours per week.

Job Duties:

Educator functions include:
• Provide guided interpretation of the AZCM and current legislative chambers to scheduled tour groups of 10 or more. (Average group size is 35 persons per group.)
• Participate in live Q&A sessions with virtual field trip participants over virtual meeting software such as Zoom, Google Meets, etc.
• Monitor museum exhibits and answer questions as needed. Provide interpretation to casual visitors and post-tour scheduled groups who are free exploring the AZCM. Explain governmental structure/procedures and Arizona history to guided and free exploring visitors.
• Work in museum store as back up, assisting visitors and merchandising. Set up for special events; moving chairs, computers/other tech, stanchions, signage, etc.
• Tour support work including preparing handouts and exploration materials, organizing weekly schedule, checking public spaces for damaged exhibits and areas needed cleaning, confirming status of scheduled groups, data entry of tour evaluation forms.
• Assisting the full-time staff in the developing of new interactive tools for visitors and exhibit research.
• Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of how Arizona’s Government developed as provided through in-house training.
• Skill in public speaking, ability to speak confidently, clearly, and precisely to a large group of people.
• Skill in explaining complex government and civics concepts to persons of varying ages and backgrounds.
• Skill in inter-staff coordination.
• Classroom/crowd management & control.
• Consistently provide excellent customer service & strong interpersonal skills.
• Effective time management.
• Stamina, ability to be on the floor leading tours for up to 5 hours straight per day, ability to walk up and down flights of metal grid stairs multiple times per day.
• Ability to feel comfortable and interact socially with visitors.
• Ability to memorize and retain facts.

Selective Preference(s):

• Interest in Civics/Government, Education, History; Previous experience teaching or working with children; Previous experience in customer service, museum, or educational environment; Comfortable working with Digital Technology; Fluency in other languages/ASL helpful but not necessary.
