Job Summary:

The NHDAZ Coordinator is responsible for the statewide planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the National History Day program in Arizona. The coordinator assists teachers and schools in meeting educational standards by encouraging student participation in portfolio-building and project-based learning activities. With the assistance of AHS staff, the NHDAZ Coordinator works with educators and students to provide a high quality educational experience that promotes an understanding and appreciation for the use of Arizona history. The Coordinator is responsible for administration of the program at the regional and state level, and provides assistance at the national level. The Coordinator works with agency education staff toward increasing participation, improving program quality and assisting in integrating the program into the work of the agency. This position requires overnight travel both in-state and out of state. The Coordinator is the agency representative at the national NHD contest. The NHDAZ Coordinator also serves on the NHDAZ Advisory Council.

Job Duties:
  • Contest Season: Planning and administration of 4 regional and 1 state competitions: includes scheduling competition dates, managing the registration system, organizing site logistics, working with vendors, recruiting & scheduling judges, scheduling students, tracking participation data; soliciting financial support.
  • Outreach: includes planning and implementation of teacher and student workshops; collaborating with communication department to develop informational and promotional materials; representing AHS at ACSS and ACHE meetings and conferences.
  • National Contest: Represents the agency and supports students at the NHD national contest; assists students, parents and teachers with travel and on-site information and scheduling.
  • Coordinates and manages on the NHDAZ Advisory Council
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of Arizona K-12 history and social science standards.
  • Knowledge of National History Day program, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience of classroom instruction including lesson and curriculum planning.
  • Strong planning and time management skills.
  • Development of classroom and professional development materials.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of audiences including teachers, students, parents, volunteers and vendors.
  • Basic internet, word processing, spreadsheets and email competency.
  • Ability to use National History Day online registration system.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to move from working independently to working as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize resources/time to meet deadlines and benchmarks
  • Aptitude for proposing creative solutions within budgetary constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with teachers and other various constituencies.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
Selective Preference(s):
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or history preferred or other humanities preferred,3 to 5 years of equivalent work experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
