Public Health Scientist

Job Summary:

This position is under the Virology/Serology section of the laboratory which provides statewide clinical diagnostic and reference testing services for viral and some bacterial agents that aid in the diagnosis, management, and surveillance of infectious diseases that are of public health importance. This position is responsible for following standard operating procedures for laboratory testing using a variety of complex testing methods including molecular methods, traditional virological methods, and serological methods. In addition, this position will be responsible for other tasks to support laboratory testing in the section. This position may play a supportive role to other sections in the event of a disease outbreak or public health emergency. This position will participate in the Virology/Serology on-call rotation which can include work on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Job Duties:

– Performing complex laboratory test methods including molecular methods, traditional virological methods, and serological methods in accordance with standard operating procedures
– Performing quality control assignments
– Conducting research and development
– Miscellaneous duties (i.e. preventative maintenance, result interpretation, consultations, aliquoting, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
- Microorganisms and modes of disease transmissions.
- Immune system and serologic assessment of that response.
- Media characteristics and uses.
- Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
- Federal and State standards applicable to laboratory policies and procedures relating to specimen handling, aseptic technique and laboratory safety; regulations pertaining to confidentiality and reportable diseases.
- Laboratory techniques: GLP, aseptic technique, laboratory safety.
- Microbiological techniques: microscopy, slide preparation, and staining.
- Virological techniques: mammalian cell culture, microscopy, viral isolation.
- Molecular microbiological techniques: RNA/DNA isolation, RNA/DNA amplification, and detection, sequencing.
- Serological techniques.
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.

Skill in:
− Strong verbal and written communication skills.
− Strong computer skills.
− Strong degree of manual dexterity.
− Time management.

Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships.
- Communicate verbally and in writing.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notes.
- Write technical reports.

Selective Preference(s):

−Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in laboratory science to include 12 semester hours in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field from a nationally accredited college or university (or a foreign degree which has previously been determined to be equivalent by a nationally recognized accrediting agency)
−Professional certifications such as ASCP and ASM

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).

The candidate must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CLIA §493.1489.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27 week wait period for contributions to begin.
