This position will work in the Advanced Molecular Detection and Testing Support section in the Microbiology department. Entry-level position performing laboratory analyses on a variety of microbiological and/or chemical specimens. Interprets test results. Complies with quality control procedures. Records and reports test results. Assists with complex and specialized tests. Works with infectious, toxic, and/or other hazardous materials. Positions are responsible for quality analyses, accurate interpretation, recording test results, and determine if samples are suitable for testing. The position's duties are to support both routine and emergency microbiological activities where needed with a focus on high volume and/or highly complex testing for molecular identification and surveillance testing. The position will assist in the performance of validation and/or verification studies in all microbiology sections as assigned. The position is responsible for conducting testing to isolate and identify pathogenic microorganisms and toxins deemed to be important by law enforcement and public health agencies for priority biological agents suspected in bioterrorism attacks and will participate in the on-call rotation.
- Performs, specialized microbiological and molecular biological testing procedures on specimens/samples submitted for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain knowledge of laboratory test methods and instrumentation through conferences, technical pieces of training, and scientific journals. Maintain competency of testing across the microbiology department.
- Performs quality control testing as required by regulations; maintains appropriate records. Records results of laboratory analyses, including such information as a procedure, followed specific laboratory results, final identification, date reported.
- Performs preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments. Orders and reorders supplies for the work unit as needed.

- Principles and practices of microbiology and/or chemistry; microbiological and/or chemical laboratory methods, procedures, equipment, and technology.

- Federal and State standards applicable to microbiological and chemical test procedures.
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.
- Microbiological and/or chemical laboratory testing and interpretation.
- Using and caring for standard laboratory equipment.
- Applying safety precautions and procedures.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong computer skills - MS Office, Google Suite. Computer coding language skill is a plus.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships.
- Communicate verbally and in writing.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notes.
- Write technical reports.

Bachelor's Degree in laboratory science to include12 semester hours in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field from a nationally accredited college or university (or a foreign degree which has been determined to be equivalent by a nationally recognized accrediting agency) and at least 2 years of professional-level work experience in a laboratory. Preference will be given to candidates with Extensive experience performing high-volume PCR testing: previous clinical microbiology experience and Professional certifications such as ASCP and ASM.

The selected candidate will be required to submit to and pass a Department of Justice (FBI) Security Risk Assessment and will be required to carry an on-call phone on a rotating basis.
