Job Summary:

This position may be eligible to receive a temporary stipend of 10% in addition to base pay beginning in December 2021. If eligible, the temporary stipend amount will be calculated using the employee's base rate of pay and will be reflected in each paycheck. It is anticipated that this temporary stipend will be available through June 30, 2022.

In this position the candidate carries out all geriatric nursing care, treatment and services in a professional and prescribed manner; provides a safe, therapeutic and hygienic environment. Provides a variety of nursing care for infirm geriatric residents; oversees and trains staff in specific resident care; observes and assesses residents' behavior and physical conditions; administers medical treatment and intervention according to the plan of care; acts as lead or performs limited supervision on an assignment. In the event the Geriatric Nurse II position is the charge nurse, the incumbent oversees the functions of all licensed staff on the unit as well as the Certified Nursing Assistants. Learns, implements and monitors Arizona Management System (AMS) methods.

Job Duties:
  • Administers medication and performs treatments on an assigned unit as ordered by the physician and within scope of license.
  • Medications may be in a variety of forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, suppository, etc.
  • Treatments may include sterile and aseptic wound cleaning and dressing, postural drainage and percussion, tracheostomy, gastrostomy and jejunostomy care, and catheter care.
  • Assesses effectiveness of medications and treatment.
  • Receives and delivers a variety of information regarding the residents' medical, social, functional and other needs.
  • Participates in the receiving and giving of shift reports.
  • Communicates with residents, family and staff as necessary to ensure the resident receives appropriate care from the interdisciplinary team.
  • Performs the initial admission nursing assessment on a newly admitted resident.
  • Assists with the development of the Minimum Data Set [MDS] assessments, ongoing quarterly reviews, and care plans.
  • Maintains appropriate clinical and administrative documentation regarding diagnosis, assessments, treatment and summary of client progress.
  • Leads and performs limited supervision of subordinate staff and assists as needed with direct resident care for the completion of Activities of Daily Living [ADLs] including bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, personal hygiene and mobility.
  • Conducts and participates in in-service training and staff development programs for regularly employed staff and other duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/ process improvements and efficiency.

Knowledge of:

  • Gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practices
  • Residents' condition and changing medical/ physical/psychological care needs
  • Effects of the aging process
  • Practices and procedures of team nursing
  • Practices and procedures of developing treatment plans for resident/patient care
  • Practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicines
  • Federal, state and agency laws, rules and regulations governing general professional nursing practices and the security and control of medical
  • supplies and medications and dispensing thereof

Skill in:

  • Professional nursing methods and techniques
  • Observing and assessing behavior and progress of patients
  • Applying and interpreting state and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practices
  • Developing and carrying out patient care plans within a team nursing concept
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Interpersonal relationship skills

Ability to:

  • Ability to learn, implement and monitor AMS methods, and to use AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvement and efficiency

Selective Preference(s):
  • At least 2 years of long term care experience
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Must have a current license to practice as a registered nurse in Arizona and
  • This position is subject to the vaccination requirements outlined in CMS Interim Final Rule - Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination (published November 5, 2021) (86 FR 61555)
  • Current Negative Tb skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last 6 months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or tuberculosis
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
