JOB SUMMARY:

The Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS) is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Retirement Specialist. Under the Retired Members Manager, this position is responsible for performing mid-level support as it relates to Member Services, Retired Department. Duties include but are not limited to working directly with the public and System membership in addressing pension related inquiries, the processing of new retirement accounts, health insurance enrollments and other basic member data changes within the STARS system and providing administrative support to the department.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:
  • Establish basic retirement records for Public Safety Personnel Retirement System and Corrections Officer Retirement Plan members for pension payroll.
  • Process and review data changes to established accounts such as name, address, federal and state tax withholdings, direct deposit, dependent and basic insurance elections.
  • Provide basic administrative support to the department to include the following:
         o Process ACH returns, stop payments and check reissues.
         o Distribute daily mail and research returned mail.
         o Prepare monthly pension mailings as well as any other monthly mailings, as needed.
         o Prepare documents and files for scanning.
         o Scan and email insurance applications to the appropriate state agencies.
  • Provide customer service to members, retirees, local boards, and outside agencies.
  • Respond to general retirement benefits and health insurance related questions via multiple communications such as phone, E-mail, fax and in-person.
  • Provide technical assistance with the STARS system for active and retired members.
  • Assist with or may be responsible for special tasks/projects as assigned. Tasks may include but are not limited to the death index reporting system and making death notifications to local boards and insurance contracts.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • State and Federal statutes as they relate to the retirement and insurance benefits.
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy regulations.
  • Policies and procedures related to the operations of the Members Services Division.
  • Accounting and auditing principles in the administration of the pension payment system.
  • Rules of English grammar and composition to prepare, review and edit documents.
  • Records management systems (automated and manual files).

Skill in:

  • Participating in teams and work groups for formulating a team approach to problem solving and plan development.
  • Composing, editing, and proofreading a variety of correspondence, reports and forms.
  • The use of computer software programs.
  • The application of problem-solving techniques.
  • Providing high level customer service.
  • Effectively explaining complex system policies and procedures to others.

Ability to:

  • Exercise sound judgment in safeguarding confidential or sensitive information.
  • Apply laws, rules and regulations applicable to the retirement system.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of positions area of responsibility.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing with all levels.
  • Organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
  • Learn quickly and work within stringent deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
  • Read, comprehend and interpret complex materials.
Selective Preference(s):

Five (5) years of full-time employment in a professional level customer service environment.

Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation to include credit and criminal history.

Retirement:

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Please note that enrollment eligibility becomes effective after 27 weeks of employment.
