Job Summary:

The position performs roadway design, engineering, and manage lead design activities, and directs and reviews design activities of roadway designers within the team. Accountable for the development, review, and sealing of complex and high quality engineering plans and documents for use in the construction of roadway projects in accordance with the Five Year Program.

Job Duties:

Represents roadway design at project meetings and performs the duties of lead design engineer in forming teams, conducting meetings, facilitating issue resolutions, coordinating with outside entities, and monitoring scope, schedule and budget. Facilitates scope changes and accompanying revisions to design funding and schedule

Develops or oversees the development of roadway construction plans and details defining roadway geometrics typical sections, pavement sections, superelevations, earthwork, grading, construction phasing, intersections, interchanges, turnouts, culverts, channels, safety barrier, curb, gutter, sidewalk, fencing and walls complying with current guidelines and policies

Informally trains summer interns, EITs and new designers within the team on various roadway design methodologies. Attends staff meetings and training, consults experts, researches publications, email and websites to learn and implement current practice as it applies to design issues

Actively participates in the pre-design project development stage, attending field reviews, providing roadway design expertise, and reviewing and providing comment to scoping documents. Provides post-design services for projects under construction. Reviews and recommends approval on shop drawings construction change orders and force account work orders

Reviews design plans, engineering studies, reports, estimates and special provisions developed internally and externally for completeness, accuracy, compatibility, and adherence to applicable design guidelines, standards and policies, and provides comment

Develops or oversee the development of: roadway cross sections and earthwork reports for use in roadway construction; quantity calculations, reports, construction cost estimates and special provisions for roadway design items; drainage studies, and reports pertaining to roadway and offsite drainage features

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

Highway Engineering Principles

Federal, State rules and guidelines ADOT standards, policy and practices

Highway construction methods

Engineering material properties

Pavement materials analysis and design methods

Skills in:

Oral & written communication skills

Technical report writing and preparation

Ability to:

Organizational abilities to optimize time and assignment schedules

Analyzing various forms of materials engineering data for pavement design purposes

Interpreting highway plans, computer design printouts, and technical pavement design literature

Selective Preference(s):

Education includes a BS in Civil Engineering or closely related field and various employer provided training courses and seminars pertaining to roadway design, drainage, traffic, construction, environmental, CADD, and project management. Typically acquired through a combination of education, work experience and registration.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Registered as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of Arizona or eligible for reciprocity

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete page 7 and sign the Driver Form on page 8 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
