Job Summary:

• The School Safety and Social Wellness team within the Arizona Department of Education helps educators support the emotional, mental, and physical health and safety of students. The position of School Preparedness Specialist is responsible for administration of the School Emergency Preparedness Program. The Program takes a data-driven, all-hazards approach to advancing the capacity of public and private K-12 schools to plan for emergency, crisis, and disaster events, and covers all phases of preparedness to include Planning, Prevention, Mitigation, Response and Recovery. The program prioritizes equity in planning including the planning for access and functional needs of school community members. Program outcomes are maximized through coordination and collaboration with other state and local agencies and organizations in education, public health, health care and emergency management.
• In-state and out-of-state travel is required for this position.

Job Duties:

• Development and implementation of the annual work plan to ensure achievement of program deliverables and program and agency goals
• Development of school needs assessment
• Development, coordination and/or oversight of training and exercise programs for organization-level and school-level personnel
• Monitoring of program budget and completion of quarterly fiscal reports
• Evaluation of program activities and reporting on accomplishments
• Coordination and collaboration with partner agencies, including support of the School Preparedness Advisory Council

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:
• Health and safety program development, implementation, and evaluation
• Evidence-based practices in school safety to include prevention, intervention, and postvention strategies
• Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
• Laws and polices pertaining to school safety
• Adult learning techniques, methods, and instructional strategies for in-person and virtual trainings
• Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Education, School Psychology, Social Work, School Counseling, Nursing, or related field of study

Skills:
• Training adult learners
• Facilitation of meetings with diverse stakeholders
• Organizational, time-management, and multiple project/task management
• Strong interpersonal, presentation, oral, and written communication skills with a variety of stakeholders including educators, administrators, state agencies and law-enforcement personnel, and the public
• Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Abilities:
• Operate successfully in a team environment
• Guide and support LEAs and schools in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective school safety systems
• Absorb technical, specialized knowledge related to school safety
• Research and draw meaning from public laws and rules
• Identify and create connections between the School Emergency Preparedness Program and other federal, state, and local programs and initiatives
• Effectively communicate and collaborate, interpret information, and make decisions
• Provide great customer service and technical support to internal and external customers

Selective Preference(s):

Preference will be given to those applicants with a Master’s Degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Educational Leadership, School Psychology, Social Work, School Counseling, Nursing, or related field of study

• Position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).

Retirement:
