Job Summary:

The position serves as Supervisor-in-Charge (Shift Commander) of ASH Security Officer 1s, and ASH Security Officer 2s (Hospital Security Leads). The Shift Commander is responsible for up to 25 employees during any given work-shift. Duties include scheduling and assigning Hospital Security Staff to provide sufficient coverage to maintain10 safety and service posts which supports the campus and provides safety to staff, patients and visitors alike; inspecting all areas of the Hospital for safety compliance; interacts with and provides pertinent information with/to local law enforcement agencies; works with hospital management personnel supporting and/or guiding them in a variety of security and safety related protocols and procedures; may act as Hospital Chief of Security in his absence.

Authority to make decisions concerning all aspects of staffing activity and assigns staff according to competency and experience; exercises independent judgment within established guidelines and protocols. Directs Hospital Security staff in responding to various
Codes (emergency response) as appropriate; provides emergency response support for forensic and civilly committed patients and residents civilly committed to ACPTC, including responding to medical emergencies. As first-line supervisor attends shift briefings chair;
directs discussion, explains, listens, guides problem-solving processes, resolves conflicts; interviews prospective applications for positions in work unit, recommends personnel actions. As first-line supervisor, initiates disciplinary action against employee for infractions of policy, rules or regulations; attends supervisory staff meetings; gives and receives information. May participate as a member on various hospital committees (Pre-Construction, Environment of Care).

Job Duties:

- Performs supervisor duties for Hospital Security (24/7), assigns staff to provide and maintain coverage often assigned posts which supports the ASH and ACPTC, provides safety to staff, patients and visitors alike for designated shift. Supervises Hospital Security staff in any emergency response service department is required to support, acts as a resource when appropriate.
- Participates in staff development; involved in staff corrective actions; interviews applicants, makes hiring recommendations; evaluates staff, prepare and submit reports; approves or disapproves leave requests; administers performance reviews; and recommends corrective action. Interprets rules and regulations, policies, procedures and protocols for Hospital Security staff to ensure their understanding and compliance.
- Interacts with hospital staff, patients and residents, providing sub-professional counseling and crisis intervention as required; refers incidents to appropriate care and treatment team, writes and submits appropriate related reports as necessary, confers with appropriate management teams; advocates that Hospital Security staff assist Nursing and the hospital in maintaining a therapeutic environment for patients/residents.
- Reviews and assists department manager in writing related administrative guidelines, protocols and duty station procedures. Confers with the Hospital Chief of Security and/or other managers in helping to resolve employee, patient, resident or visitor relationships; assists in problem solving an decision making. Assists with various administrative duties.
- Attends related staff meetings and assigned committee meetings for the Security Department, providing input, receiving and giving information, resolving problems and may lead in the decision-making process; makes staff personnel recommendations to manager; may serve as Hospital Chief of Security in his absence.
- Must have the ability to be able to react and respond quickly to any emergency situations with a safety and security approach. Other duties as required.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
-Federal and state laws and due process as it relates to safety and security of the hospital
campus.
-Proper methods and circumstances requiring use of force; proper use of metal, leather, and cloth restraints.
-Proper methods to be used when transporting patients.
-Hospital rules, regulations and procedures as it relates to the safety and security of the
campus, order, discipline of staff and mental health and/or behavioral health patients.
-Methods and techniques and practices of operating two-way radios, security cameras,
security devices, electronic doors, electronic sound equipment, telephone system and
intercom system.
-Evacuation procedures including the use of fire extinguishers, sprinklers, test valves and
their operation.
-Proper investigation and report writing.
-Principles and practices of supervision and leadership.
-Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and
Lean methodologies.

Skills in:
-Applying and interpreting safety and security, custody, and consequence
measures.
-Using self-defense and use of restraints and other defense control devices.
-Basic first aid and CPR.
-Oral and written communication.
-Basic methods, techniques, and practices of conducting investigations; examining and
evaluating evidence.
-Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff,
patients/residents, visitors, and local law enforcement agencies.
-Drive State vehicles and ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
-Hospital emergency response techniques.
-Supervisory abilities and leadership; resolving problems and motivating and
encouraging staff towards success in the work place.
-Establishing and maintaining work relationships with other sections within the
hospital, contractors, and the public.

-Evaluate staff and other departmental demands and to respond with the appropriate support and action.
-Resolve related administrative and operational problems referred by subordinates or other hospital staff.
-Coordinate the flow of work between each shift and the daily structured and changing
demands of the hospital.
- Ability to provide job related training to new and existing staff.
-Perform work at/attend meetings at alternate locations and/or travel when
necessary.

Selective Preference(s):

At least three years of progressive leadership in a security and/or safety setting, preferably in a mental health care facility or in hospital/institutional security, or law enforcement work experience.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certification.
- Must possess a valid level one fingerprint clearance card issues pursuant to A.R.S.41-1758.07 or must apply for a level one fingerprint clearance card within seven working days after beginning employment.
