Job Summary:

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Criminal Division/Fraud and Special Prosecution Section is seeking a Senior Paralegal. This position is assigned to two to three attorneys who handle complex fraud cases, white collar crimes, including but not limited to, securities fraud, public corruption, identity theft, forgery, credit card fraud and a variety of conflict prosecutions submitted by outside prosecution agencies, that are voluminous and document-intensive. This position needs to be filled with a highly experienced legal assistant to assist the attorneys with their complex caseloads.
This position will be responsible for preparing and drafting legal memorandums and reports of a complex and/or sensitive nature; conducting legal research, writing projects; review and gather documentation to respond to public records request; responsible for obtaining criminal history information and processing Interstate Extradition paperwork for charged defendants and managing the disclosure process in complex multi-defendant cases involving voluminous legal documents. This includes organizing the documents, bates stamping, redacting, creating the disclosure index; and conducting a detailed document review and preparation of discovery materials for trial cases. Also responsible for assisting in trial preparation and supporting the attorneys throughout trial. Utilizes software and data management programs such as Concordance and Trial Director. In addition, this position will assist and mentor other Fraud & Special Prosecutions Section Paralegals regarding Interstate Extradition matters.
This position requires substantial experience based on the sophisticated nature of the section’s case load, including wiretap interception investigations, white collar fraud, criminal enterprise, money laundering and a variety of conflict prosecutions submitted by outside prosecution agencies.

Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.

Job Duties:

• Managing the disclosure process in complex cases involving voluminous documents, including organizing the documents and bates stamping, redacting, creating the disclosure index and conducting document review and preparation of discovery materials for trial cases. Prepare for filing with the court complex disclosure statements summary reports and exhibits under the supervision of the attorney.
• Assist attorneys in trial preparation in complex document-intensive cases and supports the attorneys throughout trial. Assist attorneys in conducting document review and preparation of discovery materials for trial, preparation of trial witnesses and assists with witness interviews. Conducts legal research, through the use of Westlaw. Confers with prosecutors on a day-to-day basis with regard to cases handled. Attends meetings, interviews and seminars as requested by the Section. Additional duties as assigned.
• Prepare pleadings, motions and other legal documents as requested by an attorney. Prepares extradition and detainer paperwork for charged defendants in other jurisdictions, as necessary. Obtains confidential criminal history information and evidence of prior criminal records from state and federal databases and local and foreign jurisdictions. Prepares for filing allegations of priors, if necessary. Conducts legal research, through the use of Westlaw. Confers with prosecutors on a day-to-day basis with regard to cases handled.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of techniques and principles used for writing briefs, reports, opinions and other legal memoranda and reviewing, organizing, bates stamping and redacting voluminous documents.
• Knowledge of legal terminology, legal concepts and procedures of state laws, of the functions and jurisdictions of local and state courts.
• Knowledge of trial preparation including, creating trial notebooks, preparing subpoenas; maintaining witness contact list/files, trial exhibits and summary charts.
• Knowledge and skill in the methods, techniques and principles of legal research and writing and the interpretation of statutes, codes and other legal resources.
• Ability to prioritize and plan large scale projects. Ability to use various types of equipment, computers and software.
• Ability to work closely and effectively communicate with law enforcement officers, court personnel, agency personnel, defense attorneys and witnesses.
• Knowledge of extradition procedures, including identifying and preparing appropriate documents necessary to ensure extradition of a defendant.
• Skill in concise and effective oral and written communication, with internal personnel and external contacts.
• Skill in following/taking a variety of delegated directions/decisions with close supervision.
• Exercise sound judgment.
• Skilled in writing legal memoranda and reports.
• Skilled in researching and extracting information from statutes, codes, legal documents and court decisions.
• Skill in administrative tasks, such as typing with accuracy and speed, including transferring of data from one document to next.
• Skill in Word, Excel, Adobe and Access databases.
• Skill in Trial Director, Concordance and other trial software as required.
• Ability to prioritize and plan large scale projects.
• Ability to use various types of equipment, computer and software.
• Ability to maintain and prioritize a high-volume case load without any difficulty.
• Ability to understand the attorney/client relationship including the need for confidentiality and discretion.
• Ability to coordinate activities with a variety of law enforcement agencies, governmental and non-governmental agencies.
• Ability to form and maintain cordial working relationships with all level of staff and supervisors/AGO leadership.
• Ability to interact with outside entities with diplomacy and tact.
• Ability to represent the Attorney General in cooperative efforts with outside law enforcement agencies throughout the State.
• Ability to be well organized and analytical.

Selective Preference(s):

Paralegal Certificate and/or degree preferred.
