The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is one of the largest publicly operated shooting facilities in the country. Our world-class shooting range is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and has received a Five Star rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Located on 1,650 acres in north Phoenix, the Ben Avery Shooting Facility averages more than 240,000 shooters per year. The facility offers a fun and safe environment for shooters of all experience levels and strives to provide a quality recreation experience for all users.

The Rifle/Pistol Range is currently seeking to fill a temporary Shooting Range Assistant. The assignment is set to start by November 2022 and end by March 31, 2023. The schedule will include working a rotating shift, including weekends and holidays outside in a noisy environment while exposed to heat, cold, wind, rain, and/or dust.

Job Duties:

Under close supervision, the Shooting Range Assistant will perform entry level tasks associated with range safety enforcement, education and awareness while performing superior customer service.

Description of Duties:

- Observes public shooting and ensures a safe and family-friendly range experience for all customers

- Performs daily maintenance tasks to include filling and maintaining the clay target machines and other range equipment, raking and cleaning various fields, emptying trash and assisting in the care of the landscape and other facility maintenance / custodial duties along with providing customer service and safety.

- Assists range staff in set-up, implementation and completion of corporate events, introductory shooting programs, and other shooting sports activities throughout the season, in addition to performing basic maintenance and upkeep of the public shooting area.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The candidate must have exceptional customer service and communication skills and have the ability to interact and work with a diverse variety of customers, user groups, and employees. The candidate must have a safety mindset and be prepared to enforce range safety rules equally at all times.

Selective Preference(s):

General knowledge of proper and safe handling of a variety of firearms and range safety practices are a plus.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card issued will be required. Must be legally able to possess a firearm in accordance with applicable federal and state laws. Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Medical/Physical examination will include a baseline blood lead level and a baseline hearing test, both which will be conducted on an annual basis.

This position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
