The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is one of the largest publicly operated shooting facilities in the country. Our world-class shooting range is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and has received a Five Star rating from the National Association of Shooting Ranges. Located on 1,650 acres in north Phoenix, the Ben Avery Shooting Facility averages more than 240,000 shooters per year. The facility offers a fun and safe environment for shooters of all experience levels and strives to provide a quality recreation experience for all users.
Under the direction of a Senior Range Master, Range Master-in-Charge or range management, performs customer service, public education, and safety duties of considerable difficulty which includes knowledge of firearms safety and public education to oversee assigned trap and skeet fields or sporting clay courses. Work schedule will consist of mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends in a noisy environment, which may include working in extreme heat & cold, wind, rain, and/or dust.
Major duties include:
Assist the public and enforce range safety rules, procedures, and standards, detects and reports vandalism and trespass infractions
Detects and reports various maintenance issues dealing with the clay target machines and stocks clay target machines with adequate targets for customers
Provides customer service to facility, perform safety checks to ensure compliance with safety and facility procedures, and provides safety and security
Answer public questions on the facility and assist with education and outreach programs and corporate events
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge of firearms safety is required, customer service techniques, knowledge of firearms, safety, facilities maintenance, range maintenance, basic security measures, first aid, facility operational standards, emergency response procedures, facility procedures, and driving, operating and maintaining assigned automotive equipment.
Candidates must be skilled with person-to-person interaction with a wide variety of customers visiting the facility while successfully meeting their needs, dealing with the public in varied and complex situations while maintaining alertness in difficult situations, and multi-tasking while maintaining situational awareness and good verbal communication skills to staff and customers.
The candidate must be able to observe public shooting, recognize safety violations, and correct safety issues while maintaining the highest levels of customer service, speak with a wide range of customers, work well with other employees, resolve conflicts/issues as they arise, use hand and power tools safely and operate communications equipment.
Level 1 fingerprint clearance is required. Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Medical/Physical examination will include baseline blood lead and zinc levels and a baseline hearing test, all of which will be conducted on an annual basis.
This position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
Employees must be legally able to possess a firearm in accordance with applicable state and federal laws and statutes.
