Job Summary:

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Note: Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties:

SLATE Technician 1 $21.5092/hr. Grade 18:

This is the entry level for the SLATE series. Performs a broad scope of basic level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance and/or repair of ITS devices including DMS, cameras, and traffic signals, with significant specialization in communication devices and networks.

SLATE Technician 2 $23.0264/hr. Grade 19:

This Is the Intermediate level for the SLATE series. Performs a broad scope of intermediate level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation maintenance and/or repair of ITS devices including DMS, cameras, and traffic signals, with significant specialization in communication devices and networks and is responsible for associated record keeping/documentation.

SLATE Technician 3 $25.4138/hr. Grade 20:

This is the advanced level for the SLATE series. Highly skilled electrical technician with significant specialization in all areas of ITS devices and associated communications networks, including DMS, cameras, and traffic signal systems. Works under the general supervision of a SLATE Supervisor. Performs and may direct staff in a broad scope of advanced level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance and/or repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems. Position includes significant record keeping documentation and project inspection.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

SLATE Technician 1 $21.5092/hr. Grade 18:

Performs basic contract management, quality assurance, and inspection duties associated with traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems as required. Works under supervision with considerable on-the-job training. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

Will have experience:

With heavy/motorized equipment operation
Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector

SLATE Technician 2 $23.0264/hr. Grade 19:

Performs contract management, quality assurance, and inspection duties associated with traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems as required. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

Will have experience:

With heavy/motorized equipment operation
Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector. (minimum of 1 year equivalent experience at SLATE technician 1 level is required for SLATE technician 2)
Specific to traffic signals, networking or intelligent transportation systems

SLATE Technician 3 $25.4138/hr. Grade 20:

Provides advice and resolves problems; participates in work activities as required. Schedules and assigns work activities; approves inspection project documentation reports; determines and select alternatives in materials or equipment, has authority to inspect and determine the need for repairs or replacement; recommends ordering of materials and equipment; works under supervision while providing training to lower level technicians; interprets specification requirements, performs contract management and quality assurance as required, reviews plans and special provisions for ongoing projects. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

Will have experience:

With heavy/motorized equipment operation
Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector (minimum of 1 year equivalent experience at SLATE technician 2 level is required for SLATE technician 3)
With leadership and training of subordinates
Specific to traffic signals, networking or intelligent transportation systems

Pre-Employment Requirements:

SLATE Tech 1 must have an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit prior to start date. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) within 6 months of appointment.

Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all CDL holder’s. Once a Class A permit is obtained, the selected employee will be required to register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their
employment. Register by visiting https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/Register

Must be able to Push/Pull 50 lbs. and Lift/Carry 50 Lbs

Must be able to perform tasks while in a bucket up to 100 feet in the air.

SLATE Tech 2 must have an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit prior to start date. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) within 6 months of appointment.

Existing CDL holders applying for higher tiers
