Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Special Investigator Supervisor, performs statewide, national, and at times international investigations of highly complex nature, oftentimes involving multiple criminal offenses, working with a high degree of independence. Reviewing allegations, complaints or other information to determine/criminal offenses may have been committed. Conducting investigations, including but not limited to; theft, fraud, embezzlement, forgery, conspiracy, fraudulent schemes, political corruption, etc. Conferring with prosecuting attorneys regarding progress of investigations, quality of case files and evidence, drafts of subpoenas, warrants, etc. Preparing affidavits to obtain search warrants, arrest warrants, wiretaps, physical characteristic court orders. Background check is required

Job Duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Reviewing information and documents; analyzing data, planning case strategy, maintaining case files and evidence; preparing case reports.
    Interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects on the phone or in person. Travel as required, including state, interstate and international that may require overnight stay.
  • Engage in undercover investigation operations, conducting surveillance of case suspects, investigative activity with other local, state and federal agencies.
  • Preparing and serving search warrants; conducting searches; seizing and securing evidence.
  • Serving arrest warrants; physically arresting suspects and booking suspects in jail.
  • Conferring with prosecuting attorneys (e.g. Asst. Attorney General, County Attorneys, US Attorney) concerning investigations and legal issues.
  • Testifying in criminal, civil and administrative proceedings.
  • Training (Mandatory Firearms, AZPOST, ADOT)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures
  • Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners
  • Defensive tactics
  • First Aid, CPR
  • Court systems, procedures and protocols
  • Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system
  • Principles of report writing

Skills in:

  • Interpreting relevant state and federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
Experience, education and training in law enforcement/criminal justice environment and course work resulting in full authority Peace Officer Certifications as mandated by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Minimum of 3-years in an investigative or detective unit.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority Peace Officer certification. A CVSA certification may be required. Weapons certified in accordance with AZ P.O.S.T. standards, physical, polygraph,background check and possession of a valid Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 and PART 2 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment prior to the interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR) and conduct a reference/ background investigation. The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record and background prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.
