Under the general direction of the Traffic Engineer Manager (Design Section Manager), directs project design activities of a design team. Prepares schedules and allocates the design team’s resources to various projects. Manages team administrative needs. Oversees the development of the traffic engineering documents, design standards, policies and procedures. Provides direction to staff in performing highly complex traffic engineering designs.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Directs the functional activities of the design team, assigning work and preparing schedules for achievement of work objectives and completion of project designs. Coaches subordinate staff in technical, professional, and personnel areas. Evaluates team training needs and develops plans for meeting them. Assists in the solution of highly complex traffic design problems. Assists in the development, maintenance and use of standard drawings, policy and procedure design manuals and CADD. Oversees report preparations, consultant review and construction issue resolution.
Administers all personnel activities of the design team such as employee performance evaluations, timesheet approvals, employee schedules, leave requests and disciplinary actions. Represents Traffic Engineering Group and ADOT at meetings with other sections, groups, outside agencies, consultants, and contractors. May drive a State vehicle in the course of State business. Maintains continuous communication and coordination between groups, staff and outside agencies through personal contact, reports and meetings.
Acts as liaison between Design Section and various District construction and headquarters personnel on construction issues. Supports and promotes partnering as a way of doing business on all projects. Provides guidance and input on escalated design issues. Reviews traffic engineering related specification and recommends and approves changes when necessary. Implements new traffic design concepts and procedures. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technical issues and design guidelines, initiates, reviews and approves traffic engineering studies, reports and plans produced by staff, consultants or outside agencies. Administers and manages on-call consultants and contract personnel.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, as well as experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer I. Previous management experience is a plus.
Registered Arizona Professional Engineering License - Civil or candidates will be required to meet registration requirements set forth by the Arizona Technical Board of Registration and attain an Arizona PE from the Board within 6 months of employment start date.
Must possess a valid Arizona state driver's license with an acceptable 39 month driving history - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
