Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in survey, inspection of highway construction projects, field testing quality control tests on materials,
verifying quantities, documentations of daily construction activities, contracts, employee interviews, and construction checklist.

Complete administrative documentation and complex engineering reports, and training other ADOT personnel on assigned construction projects.

The technician will normally be assigned to more than one area of construction and can be
subject to irregular work hours.

Overtime may be required including working nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary. During inclement weather this position will be required to assist in winter operations, including but not limited to roadblock duty and dispatch. Snow plowing may be done on voluntary basis.

This position will also be required to assist the unit supervisor in implementing process improvements and the Arizona Management System. This position will be required to drive a State vehicle.

Job Duties:

Inspects highway construction on an ongoing basis to assure compliance with contract and with State and Federal standards, inspections and examinations are made of materials, surface conditions, proper tracking, structural features, and other relevant factors.

Performs field materials tests on soil, asphalt and concrete samples for quality assurance.

Inspects and examines engineering project records, field notes, computations, and other documentations to assure that methods of measurement and bases for payment are in accordance with projected trends, specifications, and other extra work orders.

Confers with construction engineers and contractors regarding construction in progress and its conformance to specifications and construction plans, answers questions, and resolves problems.

Consults manual, rulebook codes, or regulations in order to find exact required course of action, determination or authorization.

Inspects sites on proposed highway facilities in order to review all factors relating to proposals and to confirm or verify data as presented.

Logs or records all work flowing into the work unit, processed, or flowing out, in order to have accurate history of work or work performed.

Attends training and safety meetings as required.

Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:
*Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction state highway road systems.
*Knowledge of construction inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
*Knowledge of construction material is testing procedures.
*Knowledge of standards, policies, and procedure applicable to the area of assignment.
*Knowledge of the use of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) work zones.
*Knowledge of computer programs applicable to the functional work unit.

Skills:
*Skills in work scheduling and management.
*Skills in analysis and preparation of materials field testing data.
*Skills in written and verbal communication.
*Skills in operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties.
*Skills in effective verbal and written communications.

*Ability to operate and maintain a varied of construction quality control equipment.
*Ability to read and interpret a variety of construction documents, including highway maps and plans.
*Ability to plan, coordinate, analyze, and perform multiple tasks and inspections.

*Ability to be flexible in day to day operations.
*Ability to be open to new ideas and process improvements

Selective Preference(s):

High school diploma or GED, 2 years’ experience in inspecting minor highway construction projects or hot mix and concrete plants or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance or related duties; or

90 semester hours applicable towards Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or closely related profession may substituted for the required experience. ATTI & ACI cert are preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Valid Driver's license is required.
