This position will serve as the lead technician and perform laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt mix, and other routine and non-routine testing of highway construction materials. This position is responsible for monitoring and reviewing all laboratory functions, equipment and test results generated by the lab. The lead worker delegates work assignments to the other technicians in the lab and provides necessary training. This position helps ensure that all sampling and testing is performed in accordance with the Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT) Materials Testing Manual and Standard Specifications. Duties also include monitoring test results and working with project labs to resolve test result discrepancies between labs and maintaining project records.
Performs laboratory testing of highway construction materials in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, and Arizona standard test procedures. Reviews completed test cards for correctness and compliance with project documents and Standard Specifications, and enters test data into ADOT's computer-based systems. Responds to non-correlating test results and notifies supervisor to determine course of action.
Maintains required technical training and certification and becomes proficient with new procedures, provides training to other lab technicians. Delegates work assignments to other laboratory technicians and monitors testing to ensure compliance with the ADOT Materials Quality Assurance Program, established standardized procedures, and laboratory safety protocol.
Monitors the inventory of expendable lab supplies. Transports samples, supplies, and/or equipment to other labs, attends meetings as assigned, attends materials conferences and development/training classes and seminars. May be in travel status overnight and operates a state vehicle during the course of state business. Maintains sample logs, ensures proper sample management, and reports test results within required time periods. Communicates with project personnel regarding sample testing status.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, procedures, and techniques used in sampling and testing highway construction materials in accordance with ADOT Standards Specifications, Construction Special Provisions, ADOT Materials Testing Manual and ADOT Policies and Procedure Directives.
- Independent Assurance and Correlation sampling and testing with the ability to verify construction inspection.
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of material testing equipment and inspection measuring devices.
- Equipment used in construction of highway projects.-Evaluation and interpretation of completed material testing results.
Skill in:
- Work scheduling and management.
- Analysis and preparation of data.
- Various computer programs including Google Workplace applications and Microsoft Office programs.
Ability to:
- Perform mathematical calculations using a variety of computer applications.
- Ensure that materials, equipment, and procedures used comply with agency standards.
Five years of construction or materials testing experience.
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
