Job Summary:

Serves as a lead technician, under direction of Resident Eng. or designated representative. Coordinates activities on highway construction projects, including quality control inspections, project lab/project office. Inspects and documents complex items, such as structures and concrete/asphalt pavement; performs related duties as necessary due to staffing requirements.

Schedules/reviews completed work of other employees. Position can be subject to irregular work hours, along with daily/occasional overnight travel. Drive a State Vehicle. Adhere to the standards of conduct for state employees. Inspecting minor highway construction projects or hot mix and concrete plants or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records, maintenance or related duties.

Job Duties:

Inspects highway/construction on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with contract and state, federal standards; inspections and examinations are made of materials, surface condition, proper tracking, structural features and other factors. Samples various construction materials for compliance.

Use PEN and FAST computer systems to effectively manage and administer construction projects. Prepare project documentation to ensure conformance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards. Review/prepare contract documents related to force accounts, change orders, supplemental agreements. Confers with maintenance/construction engineers and contractors regarding construction in progress and its conformance to specifications and construction plans, answers questions and resolves problems.

Develop work schedules, assigns and directs employees to meet overall expectations related to assignments. Provide training, coaching and guidance to employees as directed. Attend meetings and represent the unit as directed. Support and practice continuous improvement initiatives by consistently evaluating current workflows, proactively identifying inefficiencies and implementing solutions to enhance current processes.

*Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction of state highway road systems.
*Knowledge of construction inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology or closely related profession may be substituted for the required experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
