Job Summary:

Serves as the Materials Coordinator for the Unit. Coordinates material activities on highway construction projects; insuring all materials that are incorporated into each project meets project specification; monitoring required material sampling and testing; meeting required administrative needs; functioning as the primary contact for coordinating the materials activities between project personnel, the Project lab, the Regional lab and the contractor. Subject to work irregular hours including occasional travel and overnight stays.

Job Duties:

Review, verify and approves calculations, test results and documentation related to the area of assignment. Performs construction project inspection, survey, documentation and testing as required for the area of assignment. Reviews technical problems and develops procedures and recommendation for resolution of issues related to the area of assignment. 

Reviews construction plans, specifications and documentation to ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements. Consults with contractors, local agencies and citizens to develop alternative solutions to resolve issues at the lowest level in the field. Prepares project related documentation to ensure conformance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards.


Reviews, verify and approve contractor pay quantities. Develops work schedules, assigns personnel and directs activities of personnel to meet overall expectation related to the area of assignment. Reviews and/or prepares contract documents related to force accounts, change orders, supplemental agreements and final documentation for completed projects. Provides training, coaching and guidance to personnel as directed, and attends meetings and represents the District as directed.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  •  Principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction of State highway road systems.
  • Construction inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Materials and equipment used for highway construction and materials testing purposes.
  • Federal, State statutes and agency standards, policies and procedures applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Google Workspace and Adobe Acrobat.

SKILL IN:

  • Work scheduling and time management.
  • Analysis and preparation of data.
  • Written and verbal communication.
  • Operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties.
  • Interpersonal relations, as applied to contacts with contractors, representatives of other governmental agencies,and other agency employees.

Selective Preference(s):

Four years experience with inspecting highway construction projects or hot mix and concrete plants or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance or related duties.

A Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology or closely related field may be substituted for experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Must acquire American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Testing Technician Certification and Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI)
Field Testing Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire.

Current valid Driver's License - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
