Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Roadway Design Team Manager, and with guidance from the Design Engineers, performs roadway design activities within the team including studies, reports, plans, and estimates. Reviews and evaluates engineering reports, studies and plans prepared by the project team, consulting design firms, and others. Performs or assists staff in performing highly to moderately complex designs. Assists the Design Manager in preparing and monitoring of project schedules and coordinates with other project team members regarding project development. Reviews and recommends approval of contractor initiated documents. Accountable for the development of complex and high quality engineering plans and documents for use in the construction of roadway projects in accordance with the Five Year Highway Construction Program.

Job Duties:

Develops or assists in the development of roadway construction plans and details defining roadway geometrics, typical sections, pavement sections, super elevations, earthwork, grading, construction phasing, intersections, interchanges, turnouts, culverts, channels, safety barrier, curb, gutter, sidewalk, fencing and walls complying with current guidelines and policies

Develops or assists in the development of roadway cross sections and earthwork reports for use in roadway construction. Develops or assists in the development of quantity calculations, reports, construction cost estimates and special provisions for roadway design items. Develops or assist in the development of drainage studies and reports pertaining to roadway and offsite drainage features

Actively participates in the pre-design project development stage, attending field reviews, providing roadway design expertise, and reviewing and providing comment to scoping documents

Reviews design plans, engineering studies, reports, estimates and special provisions developed internally and externally for completeness, accuracy, compatibility, and adherence to application design guidelines, standards and policies, and provides comment

Represents roadway design at project meetings, and assists the design manager in forming teams, conducting meetings, facilitating issue resolutions, coordinating with outside entities, and monitoring scope, schedule and budget. May drive a state vehicle during the course and scope of business

Attends staff meetings and training, researches publications, emails and websites to learn and implement current practice as it applies to design issues

Provides post-design services for projects under construction. Reviews and provides comment on shop drawings construction change orders and force account work orders

Informally trains summer interns, EITs and new designers within the team on various roadway design methodologies

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of Civil Engineering as applied to the development, design, construction and maintenance of the State Highway System

Federal and State regulations, policies, procedures, design standards and guidelines as applicable to the Highway Development Process

State Statutes, safety practices, and the organization and responsibilities of the Infrastructure Delivery & Operations Division

Roadway Group procedures, standards and guidelines and of techniques used in data collecting

Skills in:

Oral and written communication

Planning and organizing work

Listening and problem solving

MicroStation, In Roads and Microsoft applications

Ability to:

Develop roadway plans, to produce drainage, earthwork and quantity reports, and cost estimates

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or closely related field and two years experience as a Transportation Engineering Associate (Grade 18 or above), or completion of the ADOT Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) program, or registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Arizona.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete page 7 and sign the Driver Form on page 8 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
