The Senior Research Biologist will be responsible for organizing, analyzing, conducting, and coordinating research and monitoring projects within the Wildlife Contracts Branch.
Primary duties include project planning, study design, project implementation, and preparation of reports related to desert tortoise research and monitoring projects. The candidate will use statistical methods and automated data processing techniques to compile and analyze data. The candidate will oversee the work of biologists in the field, including technicians and interns, and will operate and maintain a variety of specialized field equipment common in wildlife work (including 4x4 vehicles). Work hours may be irregular, and will sometimes include working weekends, holidays, or at night. Will perform additional research related duties as assigned. Field work is often conducted in the heat of the summer in the desert.
The candidate will have knowledge of wildlife science, Sonoran Desert wildlife identification, wildlife management techniques, job-related federal, state and agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, scientific data collection procedures, data analysis techniques (demographic, spatial, and occupancy modeling), and report writing techniques. The candidate will have skill in supervision and delegation.
Skills include survey, capture, and handling of wildlife especially desert tortoises, working both independently and as a leader of a research team, data analysis, and interpersonal communication. The candidate will be able to use a variety of field equipment (e.g. GPS units, cameras) and must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The candidate will be able to conduct wildlife surveys during all times of the day and year, including hiking in steep terrain in midday summer desert conditions.
The preferred candidate will have the ability to apply wildlife science as appropriate to the assignment.
The preferred candidate will have a graduate degree or 2 years of experience equivalent to a Wildlife Specialist 1 and experience in field data collection and analysis.
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
