Job Summary:

The Department is actively involved in the recovery effort for the Mexican Wolf. The Range Rider’s primary fieldwork will be directed at reducing and mitigating wolf conflict.

Job Duties:

Description of Duties: The Range Rider will assist with some office administrative detail, such as data entry, collect biological data in the field, may provide technical expertise in a specialty area, and perform related work as required. Specific activities include monitoring and documenting wolves (through use of radio telemetry, remote cameras, sign search, visual observation, and other means) to assist program staff in managing wolf conflict, collecting and utilizing roadkilled native ungulates for diversionary feeding, hazing wolves with less-than-lethal munitions and other scare devices and techniques, communicating with various project stakeholders regarding project issues and objectives, utilizing several computer programs (including but not limited to ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office), operate four-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles, and hike into/camp/work in remote areas alone, work irregular hours/schedules including nights and weekends. May assist program staff as needed in implementation of other wolf management techniques, providing field support for activities including wildlife capturing and handling, population counts, and collecting and recording wildlife and/or habitat data. Performs other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must have general knowledge of Federal, state and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures appropriate to assignment. Also have knowledge of radio telemetry equipment and techniques and ability to use. Have general knowledge of wildlife management techniques, basic wolf and ungulate life histories, computer use sufficient to enter data, write reports and organize and file documents. Proper operation, maintenance and basic repair of field equipment and various vehicles, e.g., four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles.

The candidate will have skills in conducting radio telemetry; keeping accurate, thorough and detailed field notes; performing basic administrative support functions; monitoring job requirements and deadlines; responding to the public with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate timely information; responding to a wide variety of complex inquiries concerning the wolf recovery project and predator-prey life histories; operating four-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles; navigating backcountry/remote areas using map/compass and GPS technology; safe firearm handling and use of less-than-lethal/scare munitions; handling and butchering of dead/roadkill animals.

The candidate will have the ability to work both alone and as part of a team effectively; work outdoors in primitive field conditions, hike, backpack and/or camp overnight or for extended periods; work after dark and/or in challenging field conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, lightning and snow; work irregular schedule including weekends; possessing a high level of common sense, independence and decision-making ability; possessing a positive attitude in a challenging and controversial work environment with vocal opponents.

This position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
